Avoid Inspection Complacency
Complacency is a hard mindset to overcome. Whether it is an owner complacent over violations, inspections and safety precautions or employees with job complacency. Both equally harmful. Complacency comes from false security; that feeling that you've gone for a period without incident, so it won't happen now. Repetitive actions with no changes also lead to complacent attitudes. So how do we prevent this beast from rearing its ugly head? How do we insure safety first is always being followed?
The first step is awareness and communication.
This goes hand in hand. Are the business/property owners aware of the whys of your job? Do they understand the risks and what is at stake? These are job duties of an inspector that often go unspoken. We need to include awareness of our purpose; whether by providing an infographic (see below for examples), hosting a meet and greet, sending out letters, media/press; whatever works for you. Create a fire safety program to increase community visibility - utilize the natural talents of your staff. It will be more successful if it's natural and comfortable for your staff.
The second step is consistency.
Remaining diligent in your follow up, communication and in sharing your message. Safety first should be forefront on the minds of inspectors and business/property owners alike. Continue to speak of it often, daily if needed. Send reminders, post infographics in key places (elevators, locker/break rooms, restrooms), talk about it in meetings and messages. Drive home the importance and stay vigilant. Enlist the help of others to assist in keeping the momentum going.
