FEATURED EVENT: Read Across America Day
On Friday, March 2, thousands of elementary students and guests "grabbed a hat and read with a cat" in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday! The famed author penned 46 children's books that have become beloved favorites around the world, as well as symbols of a lifelong love of reading. Special food, like green eggs and ham, was available for students at lunch, some schools held parades or other fun events, and guest readers visited classrooms to read to kids and discuss what themes and life lessons they learn from books. One of those guest readers was Oregon's U.S. Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, who visited Patrick Birkle's kindergarten class at Minter Bridge Elementary School. First, she was treated to the students' reading of a book that they wrote and illustrated, then Rep. Bonamici followed with a reading of the Seuss classic "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" Superintendent's Safety Message
UPCOMING
EVENTS
In light of recent violence in south Florida and heightened concerns around school safety, Superintendent Mike Scott and the supervisor of our school resource officers, Sgt. Brian Wilber, created a message about the network of support that exists to ensure our students, staff, and schools are safe. The Superintendent also encourages people to visit the Keeping Students Safe
page on the District website to learn more about these safety supports.

Students Shine at Science Expo
Congratulations to the high school researchers from Hillsboro who competed at the Beaverton-Hillsboro Science Expo on Feb. 23. This year's most notable achievement was by the team of Ryker Bullis, Nathan Fritsch, and Nick Ogden from Glencoe who won a Best of Fair award for their development of an amphibious robot designed to collect scientific data in hazardous environments. They will compete at the 2018 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA, on May 13-19.

Evergreen Middle School Students Become Published Authors
In the spring of 2017, students in Sean Fishback's creative writing class at Evergreen Middle School wrote "The Fire Book" to teach children about fire safety, using the metaphor of a dragon. The story was inspired by an Evergreen family who was displaced by a fire in their home. The book was published free of charge by Believe in Wonder Publishing and is available for purchase on Amazon. Students intend to use the first $1,000 of their profits to support the American Red Cross. Read more in this recent Hillsboro Tribune article. Congratulations and great job, students!

HAPPENING IN HILLSBORO

Multiple Perspectives Equity-Focused Dialogue Session
HSD welcomes your participation in the upcoming equity-focused dialogue session, which poses the question: "What does it mean to create an inclusive and welcoming educational community?" This session was rescheduled from February due to inclement weather, so we hope you can join us! The purpose of these sessions is to bring community members together to engage in a facilitated discussion about equity-focused issues that impact our students and the community in which we live. The session will take place from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, in the Administration Center Training Lab, 3083 NE 49th Place. RSVP to Patricia Ramirez by March 19 if you would like to participate.

High School Club Participation Needed for HSF Annual Appeal
The Hillsboro Schools Foundation is looking for high school activity clubs to participate in its annual Phone-A-Thon (PAT), which raises money in support of teacher grants, afterschool homework clubs, districtwide STEM/STEAM programs, and the activity clubs themselves! Six clubs are needed from each high school for the PAT, which takes place April 23-26. Sign-up deadline is March 21.
