Art Contest

Artists are invited to participate in the 2018 Great Read  community art contest.

Artists can submit entries in any medium inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to either Library location by February 14.

What is the Great Read? 
A community event that encourages literacy,
learning and conversation. 
This year's Great Read focuses on the life and lasting legacy of  Martin Luther King Jr. 
By attending  any Great Read program, or by reading a MLK, Jr. book, you can enter a free drawing to win a Barnes & Noble gift card. In the spirit of  giving and peace, please bring canned goods or supplies to the opening and/or closing events to benefit Bags of Hope, Morningstar Mission of Joliet and St. John Food Pantry. 
Check the Rhime/Hip Hop Jeopardy 
All ages with adult, no registration required
You are not doing Hip-Hop... you are Hip-Hop! Join Lasana Kazembe as he presents Check the Rhime: The Cultural & Political Roots of Hip-Hop, a critical media literacy slide presentation that surveys the historical foundations of Hip-Hop culture. This dynamic presentation will end in a game of Hip Hop Jeopardy--act like you know, for a chance to win!!!

In the Belly of the Beast: King in Chicago
All ages with adult, no registration required
Before he reached the mountaintop, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scaled many ranges on and of this Earth - and one of them was Chicago. Though his work radiated from the deep South, his light reached the Second City as he carried on the fight for justice and equality. Join historian Clarence Goodman as he retraces the path that Dr. King took through Chicago.

The Great Read Finale: An Evening with Maggie Brown
All ages with adult, no registration required
Join us for a performance with vocal artist, songwriter and educator Maggie Brown as she shares her songs to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impact and legacy, which were inspired by the Civil Rights movement. Refreshments and book giveaways provided, while supplies last.

Winning Great Read Art Contest pieces will be on display for public viewing, with art contest winners announced at the kickoff of our Great Read closing finale.

Art pieces submitted to the Joliet Public Library for the Great Read Art Contest will be on display for all to view. A meet and greet with the artists will be held from 4-6 pm.
