 Charter for Sustainable Cleaning
Consumers are Mixing and Matching This Spring

Spring officially begins on Tuesday March 20th following three months of winter. Spring is synonymous with all sorts of things......rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal and regrowth. It also is closely linked with fresh.....air, smells and more, and there's nothing quite like lemons and other citrus varieties to add a clean, natural scent to that annual ritual-spring cleaning.

DIY1DIY Cleaning Solutions and More From Limoneira Spokesperson Megan Roosevelt and Guest Vlogger Ashley's Green Life

It's March, and that means spring cleaning is on the horizon. As with beauty and culinary pursuits, lemons and other citrus fruits can also support DIY cleaning endeavors. Citrus fruits retain seemingly endless properties that make them the DIY spring-cleaner's secret weapon and a key ingredient in many natural home cleaning solutions. In that spirit, Limoneira spokesperson Megan Roosevelt, alongside guest vlogger March collaborator Ashley from Ashley's Green Life, will be bringing her favorite DIY cleaning methods to the Limoneira YouTube channel all month long.

For a helpful demonstration, you can watch Megan and Ashley create the recipes below here on the Limoneira YouTube channel. Don't forget to subscribe - videos with more wonderful recipes, tips and tricks not detailed in this release will be added to the channel each Friday throughout the month.

Chemicals
Chemicals in Cleaning Products

Without being overly dramatic, CNN produced a program in 2016 reporting that dangerous chemicals were being widely used in our homes in everyday products.

The program noted that it was long believed that you could acquire "better living through chemistry." But that may really not be the case. In a landmark alliance, known as Project TENDR, leaders of various disciplines came together in a consensus statement to say that many of the chemicals found in everyday products can result in neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and attention-deficit disorders. Leaders coming together included  Irva Hertz-Picciotto, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of California, Davis,  Frederica Perera, a professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia University, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stated that, the Endocrine Society (PDF), the world's oldest and largest organization devoted to researching hormones.

TENDR noted that everyday chemicals, including organophosphates, flame retardants, and phthalates, can be found in food, plastics, furniture, food wrap, cookware, cans, carpets, shower curtains, electronics and even shampoo. They are pretty much everywhere around us.

The Produce Department is Natures Pharmacy

Imagine going into a produce department and having touch screens that tell you what produce items to purchase to help you solve a health care issue that you may be wrestling with (lower cholesterol, improve bone density, improving digestive health, etc. said John Carter, Limoneira's Director of Global Sales on a recent panel in Berlin at Fruit Logistica.

Well Limoneira has taken an initial step by introducing an easy software tool called The Produce Department is Nature's Pharmacy™ that is currently an app that can be used on websites and mobile devices. Limoneira cross-tabulated 52 health concerns (need to increase good cholesterol, prevent cardiovascular disease, ease insomnia) or desired outcomes (improve energy levels, reduce wrinkles, healthy hair) with 74 fruits and vegetables that contain 12 essential vitamins and 11 essential minerals that address these issues or help with the desired outcomes.

Carter explained that "We've all seen that good health and maintaining balance continues to be important to consumers.  At the same time, shoppers are looking for solutions that are easy to incorporate into their busy lives. They don't have the time or desire to expend effort on research.
We believe that the produce department is nature's pharmacy™.

If someone wants to solve a problem, here are the items to eat/drink.  Not a long list of vitamins, but easy responsive graphics. We believe that the supplement aisle has taken over and think that it produces's time to get back into the game".

Consumers Are Mixing And Matching This Spring

Remember, in the not too distant past, you'd go to your favorite grocery store and pick up apples. There was only one type and you knew that it probably satisfied the apple-a-day-keeps-the-doctor- away proposition.

Fast forward to the current grocery retail environment. There are probably 7-8 varieties of apples that can help you satisfy a number of different needs.
Well.....while we love, love, love our little friends from the apple orchards, we don't want them to have all the fun.

Lemons come in many varieties too. A recent test market was conducted to gain an understanding of consumers thoughts about specialty lemons.Three lemon varieties (Classic lemons, Meyer lemons and Pink lemons) were displayed side-by-side along with signage highlighting flavor differences.
Similar to wine pairings, each lemon variety has a predominant flavor profile that pairs with certain foods and beverages. Recipes for each of the varieties were given shoppers along with information about the characteristics of each of the lemons.

We used the knowledge from this test for a promotion that returned great results for retailers. Utilizing colorful displays, merchandising, recipes and social media, the promotion delivered not only increased overall lemon category and varietal sales but increased sales of the items from the store that paired with the lemons.

This educational promotion has continued this spring and will continue going forward. Consumers are looking for informatinand new ways to create healthy and convenient recipes and we will do our part to help.

Furthermore, we serve over 70 countries worldwide (and growing), and our customers are focusing on the more than 2.5 billion consumers that are increasingly entering the middle class and are looking for healthy and delicious citrus.

gianlucaGianluca Russo Extols The Many Benefits of Lemon Water

Gianluca Russo, a New York-based writer sang the praises of lemon water after drinking it each day for a week this past winter. Russo, whose work has been published in Business Insider, Teen Vogue,  Brit+Co, Romper, Byrdie, Paste Magazine said he drank eight ounces of water mixed with the juice of half a lemon each day for a week. Russo noted that "In case you're unfamiliar with it, many claim that drinking warm lemon water each morning can provide you with many health benefits from boosting your immune system with Vitamin C, helping with bad breath and clearing up acne.

Russo was pleasantly surprised to notice that his skin had greatly improved with no breakouts, no excess oils, no new blemishes. He also found that at the end of the week, he was much less bloated. Lemons are a natural diuretic and help the body remove excess salt.

We were very happy to hear about Gianluca's experience and add him to the long list of lemon water aficionados.
