ANNUAL MEETING THIS SUNDAY, JANUARY 21
One service only at 9:30 am Annual Meeting

We will have one service only at 9:30 am this  Sunday, January 21,  followed by our annual meeting and a potluck dinner.   Couples and families are asked to bring a meat dish and singles a side dish or dessert.  The church will provide drinks and condiments.

Please make plans to attend this very important all-parish meeting.  Hear a recap of the
2017 year, vote-in new vestry members, learn about plans for the future and help celebrate
important parish ministries.
NOMINEES FOR VESTRY
Three to be elected Sunday at Annual Meeting
Vestry

We will elect three individuals to the Vestry at the Annual Meeting on Sunday.  The following individuals have been nominated to serve our parish for a three year term:

John Biggs
Married to Joyce, began attending The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in May of 2012. Was elected to the vestry in January of 2015 and served as Senior Warden in 2017. I am close to a cradle Episcopalian as I began attending All Saints Episcopal Church in 1957 at the age of 8. I served on the vestry of All Saints several times while a member there.   While in college I served as a youth representative to the Department of Christian Education for the Diocese of West Missouri. I have been in the Life Insurance business for 44 years and have spent the last 25 years teaching a cram course for State Insurance Licensing, mostly with our company, Biggs Insurance Services since 2001.  I consider it a privilege to have served on our vestry for the past 3 years and would appreciate the opportunity to continue to be a member for another three years.

Jim Whitaker
I am interested in the Vestry and have been a member of Resurrection for four years.  I serve as an acolyte and am very active in the outreach programs that include the Kansas City Kitchen, Uplift and Community Services League projects.  My interest in serving on the vestry is to learn about and positively contribute to the inner workings of the parish.

Arla Witte
Hello, my name is Arla Witte.  My children and I have recently become regular attendees at the 10:30 services.  My children - Emma, Nicholas and Alexandra (Alex) - and I have been members of Resurrection since 2010.  I am an attorney, but currently work for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services as a Privacy Officer.  We have lived in Independence since 1998 and now we have found a permanent home at Church of the Resurrection.  Since regularly attending Sunday services, I have found a new sense of community and spiritualism in my life.

I feel a need to serve the Church and one way to accomplish that is to serve on the Vestry.  Helping to shape the future of the Church and be a voice for the membership is just one of many ways I can serve the needs of the congregation and contribute to Resurrection's success.

PROPOSED CHANGES TO BYLAWS
Will be voted upon at Annual Meeting Bylaws

The Senior Warden will present a proposal at the Annual Meeting to revise and update the Bylaws for the Church of the Resurrection.  The Vestry has approved the proposed changes.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVID

What is this "Annual Parish Meeting" stuff?

The annual parish meeting is specifically a meeting of the members of the parish. The by-laws of the parish generally require an annual parish meeting and state the qualifications to be a voting member of the parish. Diocesan canons may state requirements concerning parish meetings. The annual parish meeting typically elects vestry members, and it may elect vestry officers. Delegates to diocesan convention and representatives to other diocesan, deanery, or parish entities may also be elected by the parish meeting. The budget of the parish may be presented and approved. The rector, vestry officers, music director, Christian education director, and other parish or program leaders may make presentations at the annual parish meeting. The parish by-laws may allow the rector or a majority of the vestry to call a special parish meeting at any time. The by-laws may specify the requirements for a special parish meeting, including the requirements for notice to the members of the parish.

This is the boiler plate answer from The Episcopal Church website.  Our meeting this Sunday is a time to recognize who we have been as Christ's church in the greater life of Jesus' call to live out his commandments.  It is also a time to rejoice for the goodness that we have shared with others and our parish family.  Most importantly it is a time for all members to have the opportunity to hear about the work of the parish, ask questions and hear plans for the future.    So "come and see",  as Philip said to Nathaniel in last week's gospel about who Jesus is; one proclaimed by Moses and the prophets; come and see what Resurrection Church is all about and planning to do in the future.
