Protecting the Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale

Thursday, March 29, 6.30 p.m.
Southeast Regional Library, Rm B
10599 Deerwood Park Blvd.,
Jax 32256

Jim Hain, Senior Scientist and Project Leader of the Marineland Right Whale Project, a citizen-science organization, will describe the history and current actions that are being taken to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.  This includes actions that citizens can take.

In past years, there have been as many as hundreds of right whales in coastal waters of Georgia and Florida during winter and early spring. Now, in 2018, there are only a few. Scientists and managers are struggling to monitor and understand the status of this endangered species. Will right whales exist for our children and grandchildren?

All members and non-members are welcome. The program is free.

Nathan Ballentine: "Man in Overalls."

Monday, March 12 2018, 6:45p.m. at Lakewood Presbyterian Church
2001 University Blvd., Jax 32217

Itinerant Urban Farmer, Educator, Entrepreneur, Community Organizer, Nathan Ballentine is "Man in Overalls."
Growing in Jacksonville, FL

Connecting Globally

Nathan has been growing food since he was eight years old. In 2009, with an entrepreneurial spirit amidst the recession, Nathan launched his business as a way to inspire and support folks to grow food for self and neighbor. He combines ag. know-how with environmental design and human-focused strategies to help people grow lots of food in the least amount of space possible. He has worked with hundreds of families, dozens of community and school gardens, small market farmers, and the FL Department of Agriculture (FDACS). Originally from Tallahassee, where, in 2010 he joined with other community leaders to co-found Tallahassee Food Network, a regional coalition of the global food movement. He also served as start-up coordinator of iGrow Whatever You Like, an entrepreneurial youth farm.

In the fall of 2015, following 16 months of travel to 35 states and 19 countries to explore (and enjoy) community-based food systems, Nathan & Mary Elizabeth settled in Jacksonville, FL, the city of her birth, the town of his father's childhood. They purchased a home near downtown, and planted their own food garden, which feeds them daily and produces a bounty they are able to share with neighbors.

Nathan, Man in Overalls continues his work, now rooted in Jacksonville, FL to help others grow their groceries and maintains a blog of stories and tips at   ManInOveralls.com.  Nathan will teach us what you need to know about soil to grow your groceries. From childhood soil stories to the latest in soil science to environmentally friendly ways to grow soil.... come, get dirty with us.

Social time is from 6:30-7:00 with the program starting at 7:00pm. All are welcome. Free.

Rally in Tally: Reclaiming Florida's Future

On January 31st we had a rally and lobbying day focused on the fracking ban and other important legislative bills. "We" included our local group representatives joined with other partner organizations so we can make a bigger impact. At the time of our event, the fracking ban, SB 462 was not moving in the Senate. But due to our joint voice, the day after our event, SB 462 was scheduled for a vote in its first committee, then later scheduled for a vote in its second committee, passing unanimously both times.

Will it pass this session? As of the writing of this article, the jury is still out. But thanks to your calls and emails supporting the messages our lobbyist Dave Cullen is sending to the House & Senate members, SB 462 is moving. Please check our website for the latest action alert on the fracking ban bills!
