Jesus said, 'I will send you out to fish for people'

Last week we encountered the call from God to Samuel and Nathanael. Samuel heard God's call, but thought it was the priest Eli. Eli knew better and helped Samuel respond to the call of the Almighty. Nathanael started off resistant to the earthly ministry of Jesus. That is, until Jesus called to him in a way that showed Nathanael Jesus really was the Messiah, the Living God, familiar with and committed to relationship with Nathanael.

This week's lessons

This Sunday we encounter Jesus on the shores of the Sea of Galilee recruiting Andrew and Simon Peter. The metaphor of fishing for people is an intriguing one, assuming we school like fish and can be drawn aboard as easily as a net full of fish. After Jesus said to Andrew and Peter, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people," he invited James and John, sons of Zebedee, to join the disciples.

Our own sense of call by God differs person to person. When did God invite us to be believers? When were we encouraged to "fish for people?" The answer to that question lies in our Baptismal Covenant, as we realize that initially people made commitments for us as we were baptized as children, then later we renewed the covenant, usually at the baptism of another small child. The desire of God for us to live according to the Baptismal Covenant is matched by our own awareness and disposition to continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers; to persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever we fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord; to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ; to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves; and to you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.
