If you know me - even just a little - then I'm certain you won't be shocked when I say I like to shake things up. My family has been heavily involved in the homebuilding industry for decades, so there's no question I value history and traditions. It's critical that we know where we came from and maintain an appreciation for that if we are to move forward effectively.
 
That being said, there's definitely no harm in changing things to ensure that we stay relevant in our industry and that sentiment has never been more appropriate than now. The world around us is changing, and that change is no longer taking place over the course of a year or several years, it's happening in weeks and months. Technology is the driver of this change and there are many influential actors involved in it. So, what's the big takeaway here? Well, if we aren't planning our communities and homes to meet our future buyers where they want to be, then we are no longer relevant. We lose sales, we lose opportunities, and we lose the opportunity to grow.
 
That is the crux of what our featured speaker, Tim Sullivan of Meyers Research, will focus on this Thursday at the Breakfast Blend. Tim will take us beyond simple supply and demand issues and provide us with a glimpse into how the nature of how we do business now has changed and how it will continue to change as we delve further into the new model of the shared economy.
 
I know we say this often at the BIA, but this event really should not be missed and I encourage all members to come out and chew on some good food and even better ideas - it's the best way to start your day!

CBIA 2018 POLICY SUMMIT & WINTER GOVERNANCE MEETINGS
Its not too late to attend these crucial meetings
CBIA's Policy Summit and Legislative Reception take places tomorrow, on March 6 and Wednesday March 7 in Sacramento.
 
This is a great platform for the leaders of our industry to hold in-depth discussions about current and future issues, and its also an effective way to show the strength of the homebuilding industry to California's elected officials.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

US Fish and Wildlife Service Meeting 
The Field Supervisor for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Dr. Jennifer Norris, will speak at our Regional Builder Developer Council meeting this Wednesday March 7 at 8:30 at the BIA. Likely speaking items include the status of Habitat Conservation Plans for Sacramento and Placer Counties as well as coordination issues with the Army Corps on Endangered Species permit issues.
 
Roseville Remote Permitting and Review Starts Today
Starting March 5, the City of Roseville's Development Services Department will be moving to its new paperless permit submittal and plan review process. The department can answer any questions regarding this new submittal process at (916) 774-5285.

Improvements to Highway 65 Interchange at Interstate 80
The Placer County Transportation Planning Agency is working to reconfigure the Highway 65 interchange at Interstate 80. The first phase of construction is set to begin in 2018, with other phases dependent on funding. More information can be found here.

Roseville Joint Union Fee Change
Residential and commercial impact fees are proposed to increase to $1.50/square foot and $.24/square foot respectively, up from $1.38 and $.22. These changes will be discussed at the Roseville Joint Union School Board Meeting on March 13.

Sacramento County to Hold New Voting System Demonstration
Sacramento County is one of five counties in California to implement the Voter's Choice Act, and as such will be hosting a new voting system demonstration on March 5 at the Department of Voter Registration and Elections. Key features include vote by mail, vote centers, and accessible vote by mail systems. More information can be found here.

Out of School Youth Supported at BIA Crab Feed
We had such a great time with you at the BIA Crab Feed! Every year our OSY Program Participants have the pleasure of working for tips as the servers for the BIA's Crab Feed. The event provides great customer service experience for them and puts a little cash in their pockets. That being said, let us say THANK YOU for being such wonderful tippers this year! Each youth walked away with $125! Our Program Coordinator LaVonnia was also thrilled to see Tony, a program participant from last year, attending as a guest of Bardis Homes - the company he started a work experience with more than a year ago, and has remained a full-time employee with since!

Your next opportunity to see the Out of School Youth in action will be as volunteers at the Foundation's  Skilled Trades Job Fair on April 21. Taylor Morrison Volunteer Event
On Thursday, February 22, volunteers from  Taylor Morrison  cleaned and stocked apartment units for Veterans and their families at the Volunteers of America's Veteran Apartments. This is the second time the Taylor Morrison team has volunteered at the Veteran Apartments. With the help of Taylor Morrison and the Hewlett-Packard Veteran Employee Resource Network (VERN), eight more apartments are now ready for VOA's Veterans' families to move in. Thank you!
