REMINDER: District Closing Announcement
Just a reminder, the Roxbury Township Public Schools will be closed Monday, January 15th to observe Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Schools will reopen on Tuesday, January 16th.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit. ~Coretta Scott King, The King Center

Roxbury Board of Education Educate Themselves on Ethics and SGOs
Members of the Roxbury Township Board of Education met on Tuesday, January 9th to conduct special board training during this public two and a half hour meeting. Topics covered included board ethics and the teacher evaluation process.

The Roxbury Board of Education achieved board certification status in 2017. This process recognized the full board's commitment to training and effective governance in areas such as group process, decision-making, planning, effective meetings and focus on student achievement.

The board set its annual board goals at the July board retreat for the current school year, which included working toward the NJSBA Carol E. Larsen Master Board certification which is awarded in recognition of high performing boards. The board must provide evidence to demonstrate an emphasis on student achievement in their board actions along with completing additional hours of training.

This board training works to achieve that goal. Board President Leo Coakley explained that the second half of the training presented by Assistant Superintendent Chuck Seipp would directly correlate to this certification. Click here to read more about this training.

Another Roxbury Principal is Flocked For the Kids
Although winter is here, the pink flamingo flocking continues around Roxbury. The latest district administrator hit was Chris Argenziano, the principal over Lincoln/Roosevelt School. He came in Thursday morning to find his office full of 50 pink flamingos. One was sitting at his test pretending to be Mr. A, another group was having a bite to eat around his conference room table. You just never know when there will be another flocking!

Mr. A is in the dark as of now as to who could have flocked his office but he has his suspicions! Who knows, when he finds out, they could be next!

Flocking is a fun fundraiser for Roxbury High School's mini-THON to help raise funds for children with pediatric cancer. Click here to read more about this flocking and how you can participate!

Have you been flocked? Post your photos on social media with the hashtag #RoxburyFlocksFTK!

Roxbury's Fashion Design Class Creates Items for a Good Cause
Students in Roxbury High School's Fashion Design class created special items in December for Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristown Medical Hospital.

Fourteen students in Ruth Falvey's year-long class completed two sewing projects. The first was making 38 fleece hats and the other was making 13 children's pillowcases that were packaged and donated to the hospital.

This class serves as a guide for anyone interested in the world of fashion according to Roxbury High School's program of studies description. "Students learn about clothing design and selection, textiles, being a smart consumer, personal color analysis, line and design in clothing and fashion careers. The students will also explore the history of fashion and some of fashions' leading designers. The class will have hands-on experience sewing by hand and by machine to repair, alter, and create new projects. This course also ties in fashion drawing where students illustrate design both by hand and on the computer aided design software used in the fashion industry." RoxBotix Jr Competes in FTC Competition
Eisenhower Middle School's RoxBotix Jr. team competed in the FIRST ® Tech Challenge (FTC) at Wayne Hills High School on Sunday.  The team comprised of seventh and eighth graders took on high school competitors from around the region. Unfortunately, due to tie-breaking procedures, the team missed out on the playoffs for the day.

Team advisor and EMS STEM teacher, Phil Moskowitz said, "We were 5th seed going into our last match and lost which made us tumble all the way down to 15th due to the tie-breaking procedures. If we had won, we would've stayed at 5th."

Thirty-two teams competed overall with EMS being the only middle school represented.  "In our region, we generally see roughly 90% high school-based teams. Occasionally they will have a few middle schoolers mixed in but there are rarely middle school only teams," shared Moskowitz.  The team's next event is the county tournament at Warren County Technical School on February 3rd. The largest factor in producing the sports rankings are input from parent/student surveys on sports, followed by total high school enrollment, number of sports offered and boys and girls participation in sports,  the website said. Click here to see where Roxbury ranks!

Roxbury High School Track and Field Get Into the Giving Spirit
Roxbury High School's Winter Track and Field athletes held their kick-off dinner on December 13th and in the spirit of the season, its Booster Club decided that the team should encourage its athletes to give back to the community that supports them.

Families coming to the kick-off dinner were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Roxbury Social Services, an organization in town that provides Roxbury Township residents with necessary services and information based on individual needs and handling emergency situations in our community. The food pantry exists solely on the generous donations from individuals and local businesses. Many individuals and families in the Township rely on social services and the food pantry.

The team, made up of 27 girls and 40 boys responded, collecting enough items to fill a shopping cart. Members of the team delivered their collected items to Roxbury Social Services on Friday, December 29th, over winter break.

The RHS Track and Field team is on the brink of their championship season with numerous upcoming relays on the schedule. Click here to read more about this giving! #RoxburyGivesBack

Kinky Boots is the exhilarating Broadway musical that will lift your spirits to new high-heeled heights! Winner of six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, this inspirational story follows a struggling shoe factory owner who works to turn his business around with help from Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. Wicked... So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.  Wicked, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz...but from a different angle. When she meets a bubbly blond who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships...until the world decides to call one "good," and the other one "wicked." With a thrilling score that includes the hits "Defying Gravity," "Popular" and "For Good," Wicked has been hailed by The New York Times as "the defining musical of the decade." Time Magazine cheers, "if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place."
