Greeting

"While it should not matter, I would like to mention that I am a white girl. I read in the paper of your misfortune, and of your suffering. And I read that if you had sneezed, you would have died. And I'm simply writing you to say that I'm so happy that you didn't sneeze."
~ Letter to MLK from young girl, 1963

In 1958 MLK was stabbed in the chest at a book store in Harlem by a deranged woman named Izola Ware Curry. The blade was lodged so close to his heart that the doctors who removed it said if he had sneezed he would have died. He spoke of this incident in his 1968 "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, in which he spoke of the crucial events and fight for equality and justice of his era in terms of the sweep of human history. He, too, was glad he didn't sneeze, and we might all take a moment to be grateful for that. This week we celebrated MLK, Jr. Day, but King's legacy is more than a day of remembrance. While MLK is no longer with us we are called to continue his work of justice-seeking, reconciliation, and hope. History is being written every day, and every day is precious.

Bible & Beer
Had enough of politics?
Let's talk faith!
TONIGHT!

Bible and Beer kicks off 2018 in a new venue starting TONIGHT,  January 18th at 7pm at  Pietro's Pizza at 236 North Radnor Chester Road - only 1 mile from the church! Parking is plentiful around this new, reasonably priced bar/restaurant. The get-togethers will continue the third Thursday of every month for informal (non-political) discussions of how faithful people can interact with the world: how our view of the Gospel impacts our views of people and the challenges of our time, and how events also shape our faith.

To get there from the Church, follow King of Prussia south toward the Train Station, bearing right after going under the tracks onto Radnor Chester Road toward Route 30.  The entrance to the restaurant parking area is on the right, just across from the Radnor High School athletic field. Go in the side entrance and turn right. Come, share from your heart, and bring a friend!

Sunday School

BISHOP'S VISIT: In Sunday School the children have been preparing for Bishop Gutierrez' visit on January 21. Over the past couple of weeks our youngest members asked questions that were then forwarded to The Bishop. We all want to hear his replies! He is looking forward to seeing children, youth, and adults at 9:15 am in the chapel by the Gurley Room. This is a chance for everyone to get to know OUR Bishop before the Confirmation worship service so please plan on attending. This Q & A with The Bishop will take the place of Sunday School this coming week.Contact Deb Parker ([email protected]) if you have questions.

EXTENDED SESSION: Sunday School resumes at the normal 9:30 a.m. time on January 28. We have a special project, involving assembling Souper Bowl jars to sell during the Chili Cook Off on February 4. After the 10 a.m. worship, children and all confirmed youth are invited to gather again in the large Sunday School room, during the Parish Meeting, to enjoy refreshments and finish putting together the jars with soup ingredients.

Annual Parish Meeting

The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 28th, following the 10 a.m. service. Please plan on attending to hear church news - the year in review and projections for 2018. It's also a great time to have your voice heard, so bring your comments, questions, and suggestions! Voting will take place for new Vestry members. Coffee hour goodies will be available.

Bible Study

Newcomers are welcome to join the discussion around the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Copies of the book we are using are available for purchase or to borrow from St. Martin's. The conversation is just beginning and we'd love to have you join our spirited and spiritual conversation. St. Martin's Bible Study group is now meeting in the large Sunday School room. The evenings will offer an enlightening approach to Bible Study that's being conducted in other Diocesan churches.

2018 Offering Envelopes

Please pick up your 2018 Offering envelopes available in the Gurley Room.  If envelopes were inadvertently not assigned to you, please contact the church office.

Chili Cook-Off

The 20th Annual Chili Cook-off will happen this year as always after the 10 AM service at Bolingbroke on February 4, 2018.  The event provides the perfect prelude to the Super Bowl later that day between the Philadelphia Eagles and...?

Contestants and attendees can sign-up in the Gurley Room.  In addition to a list of the entrants, the sign-up sheet will provide space for donations of beverages, salads, bread, desserts, etc.

First, second, and third place winners will be determined by vote of the Cook-Off attendees by secret ballot, and incredible prizes will be awarded!

The Super/Souper Bowl is quickly approaching!  It's not only a day to enjoy a football championship game, but it's also a day when anyone can be a "hunger-fighting" champion. The youth of St. Martin's will once again be selling soup mixes to benefit the Great Valley and Ardmore Food Cupboards.  Purchases may be made on February 4th before or after the church services and during the Chili Cook-Off event in Bolingbroke.

Pilgrim's Prayer

Lord Jesus
may your light shine our way,
as once it guided the steps of the magi:
that we too may be led into your presence
and worship you,
the Child of Mary,
the Word of the Father,
the King of nations,
the Saviour of mankind;
to whom be glory for ever.
~ Frank Colquhoun, Church of England

Read and Ponder
this Week's Scriptures

The scripture readings for this Sunday are:

 Jonah 3:1-5, 10
Psalm 62:6-14
1 Corinthians 7:29-31
Mark 1:14-20

The Collect
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

The Old Testament
Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, "Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you." So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

The Response

Psalm 62:6-14

6 For God alone my soul in silence waits; truly, my hope is in him.
7 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
8 In God is my safety and my honor; God is my strong rock and my refuge.
9 Put your trust in him always, O people, pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
10 Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, even those of low estate cannot be trusted.
11 On the scales they are lighter than a breath, all of them together.
12 Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.
13 God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, that power belongs to God.
14 Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

The Epistle
1 Corinthians 7:29-31

I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

The Gospel
Mark 1:14-20

After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea-for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

Optional parts of the readings are set off in square brackets.
The Bible texts of the Old Testament, Epistle and Gospel lessons are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright 1989 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Church of Christ in the USA, and used by permission.
