DECA State Competitors
The DECA finalists from HUHS competed at the State tournament in Lake Geneva over the course of three days last week. All put in a lot of study time and preparation to do well on their role play scenarios as well as their written tests. Top 10 medalists in the state include Thomas Kellicut, Marley Kreger, and Sophia Stingl. One competitor, Thomas Kellicut, has merited a spot at the International competition in Atlanta this April. Mr. Kasza is exceptionally proud of the team and looks forward to them all competing next year.

HUHS singer, dancer selected for KIDS from Wisconsin
Junior Miranda Parker got a little closer to achieving her dreams of performing on Broadway when she was selected to be a part of the 50th Anniversary KIDS from Wisconsin Troupe.  "There are former KIDS who are now working in New York and on Broadway.  This is a great opportunity for me," Parker said.  Parker auditioned with performers from all over the state of Wisconsin.  "We had to sing and dance, but they were also concerned with how quickly we could apply corrections," said Parker.   In their 50th season, the KIDS will have performed for approximately ten million across Wisconsin and the Midwest, with great entertainment by some of Wisconsin's most talented performers ages 15-20. The revue is produced in collaboration with some of the best writers, arrangers, and choreographers across the country.   The KIDS will celebrate all summer from  June 21- August 18 , in over 35 hometowns across the state and twice daily at the Wisconsin State Fair, as they mark a milestone 50th year of performing and molding professional performers.  Parker has trained in dance at All the Above Dance Company in West Bend, and has spent her summers studying dance with the Milwaukee Ballet, Inaside Dance Company in Chicago, and last summer she was chosen to work with the world famous Rockettes.   She is a member of the HUHS Concert Choir and takes vocal lessons from Stephanie Klockow and Sue Andereck.  Every KID has a hometown show as the troupe travels throughout Wisconsin.  Parker's hometown show will be at the Schauer Arts Center in Hartford on July 25, 2018 at 7pm.
Children's Hospital - Wisconsin All-Star Football Team
Students and teachers can make donations to Children's Hospital on behalf of the Wisconsin All-Star Football Team.   There are 2 ways you can donate.

1. Coach Redders, Ethan Chivas, & Myles Zimdars will be selling football Icons for $2 each during the lunch/flex periods.  Students can buy as many as they want.  They will be signed and posted on the wood board across from the Main office.  Our goal is to sell 500 Children's Hospital Football Icons.  This will generate $1000.

2. Faculty/Staff can donate online by clicking here.  Select Donate tab, North Large Team and enter Redders, Chivas or Zimdars.

Staff vs. Student Battle of the Books
On Friday, March 9th, the annual Staff vs. Students Battle of the Books took place.  Participants have been reading from a 20 book list since last summer.  The battle was close, but the teachers narrowly edged out the students.  We invite you to join in the fun next year!  The books for next year will be available for summer checkout after  June 1st
Crystal Growing Contest
On March 1st, Mrs. Abraham's and Mrs. Lauer's chemistry classes started the 2018 Crystal Growing Contest sponsored by UW-Madison.  This year there will also be a WI Space Crystal Prize - thanks to the collaboration between CASIS (Center for the Advancement of Science in Space) and UW-Madison.  http://wicgc.chem.wisc.edu/index.php/crystals-in-space/  The 2017 Space Crystal Prize winners have designed a crystallization experiment to be conducted aboard the ISS (International Space Station) and will visit the Kennedy Space Center to observe the launch of SpaceX14. Six winners of the 2018 WICGC are expected to do the same - this is a very exciting opportunity both for the crystal growers and for the art contest participants.

Last year, Olivia Burkholz won the art component of the contest.  She has been working with CASIS and designed the patch that the astronauts are wearing on their launch to the International Space Station on  April 2nd.  In addition to that, Olivia's crystal solution will be launched to  the space station.  She has been working closely with the crystallography department at Madison to perfect her solution chemistry.
Prince Caspian Farewell
The Cast & Crew of HUHS' "Prince Caspian" gathers one last time on March 11th before bidding farewell to this year's Spring Play.  We felt very supported by the community, and by Staff and families who attended and cheered us on!  We'll miss Narnia and our Theater Family, but there was amazing personal growth and life-long friendships were made!

Educator of the Year - Call for Nominations!
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Educator of the Year Award at HUHS until 3:00 PM on Friday, March 23, 2018 from students, parents, other teachers and staff, and administrators to provide recognition for outstanding educators.

Nomination forms are available by clicking here or from the receptionist in the main entry at HUHS. The nomination form must be signed to be valid and includea written essay nominating a specific educator from the HUHS District.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Any full-time educator with at least three years of education experience in the HUHS District is eligible for the award. There are specific criteria, which are used in making the final selection.  The criteria are listed on the nomination form, and include how well the educator:  encourages learning, makes a difference with students, serves as a good role model for students, and fits the concept of an outstanding educator.

Nominations may be submitted by mail to Dan Dobner, Principal, by email to dan.dobner@huhs.org, or in person to the receptionist in the main entry of the school.  All nominations must be received by the March 23, 2018 deadline. The committee will meet the week of April 2, 2018, and the HUHS Educator of the Year for 2018 will be chosen and announced shortly thereafter. The award will be formally presented at the Hartford Rotary Banquet in May. Nominees will receive a copy of all nominations submitted on their behalf.

We encourage everyone from the community to participate in this process. There are many outstanding educators at HUHS, and it is a very difficult task for the selection committee to select just one recipient of the award. It is important we receive input from every part of the HUHS community, so please participate by nominating the educator you feel is most worthy of this award. Thank you for your participation.

Health Minute
MY CHILD IS ILL, WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO PICK THEM UP FROM SCHOOL?
Students and parents are reminded that the correct procedures for leaving school are as follows: If a student is ill, they should go to the Health Office located in the Attendance Office.  Ms. Scholz will make the necessary calls to get permission for the student to be picked up or leave and then issue the student a permit. Students should not be texting or calling family or friends for permission to leave school.  A student must have a blue permit from a staff member in order to leave school property or they are considered truant.  After the student receives a permit to leave, they take the permit to the front security entrance and present it to the receptionist.  If they are getting a ride home, they should then remain in the building until their ride arrives for security purposes.  Please review with your student these important school procedure to help keep your child safe at school.

Play 4 Cade

Cade began playing ball for his hometown Rubicon Red at age 7, following in his big brother Cody's footsteps and a long-standing family love Rubicon Baseball. Tragically, Cade lost his life March 14, 2017, from injuries sustained from a car accident in his hometown, just before his Pony season was to commence.

Many hearts broke that day but his amazing family found the courage to choose life in  death through God's grace and with the WI Donor Network. Cade was able to give life to 4 other people with donations of his heart, liver, kidney and kidney/pancreas.

With Cade's love of baseball blazing the way, his sense of humor reminding us to live this life, and a true desire to raise awareness of the gift of organ donation; Rubicon will host an annual Play 4 Cade boys baseball tournament each Mother's Day weekend. We welcome you to join us in the First Annual Play 4 Cade tournament. Cade's 5-year-old, local heart recipient will be throwing the first pitch to launch a whole lot of love in his memory!

UW Campus Regional Placement Testing

Senior students who have been admitted to a UW campus are invited to participate in Regional Placement Testing. As a result of taking the tests, students find out their appropriate level of math, English, and foreign language to begin in college.
Students can register online for Regional Placement Testing, beginning February 1. The benefit of Regional Placement Testing is that students can take the test close to where they live, and they don't need to travel to the campus that they'd like to attend. Also, students need register for only one placement test even if they have been admitted to different UW campuses, or if they change their mind about which UW campus to attend. All UW campuses have access to each student's scores.

Early College Credit Program (ECCP)

The 2017-19 State of Wisconsin Biennial Budget included new language regarding high school students who take courses for college credit. The budget combines the Course Options and Youth Options programs into a single new program called the Early College Credit Program (ECCP).
High school students at public and private high schools may be permitted to enroll in a UW System institution, or an alternative private, non-profit institution of higher education to take courses to earn high school credit, post-secondary credit, or both. Course costs are shared among the school district/private school and the state (and in some cases, the student's family).
Students in grades  9-12 may be eligible to take courses during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Students may submit their completed forms to school officials by  March 1 for summer/fall semester - or  October 1for spring semester.
For more information, contact your child's counselor.

ACT TESTING - 2017-18

All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org. When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $46.00 and the ACT with writing is $62.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.

HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates (except February 10).  The test dates for the 2017-2018 school year are:

April 14, 2018                                     June 9, 2018                                     July 14, 2018

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 27 (no cost to the student on February 27).    When considering whether or not to sign up to take the February 10 or April 14 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 27 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June or July based upon February results.
