In Memoriam
Dominic H. Simmons
|
|
It is with profound sadness to share that Dominic H. Simmons died suddenly on Thursday morning at the age of 41. Dominic, his wife Leslie, and their son Cash, started attending All Saints' about two years ago. Prior to that, they attended St. Michael and All Angels in Lihue.
Dominic and Leslie are the owners and operators of Ali'i Cleaning & Aina Property Services. This past fall, Dominic and his team spent a week cleaning and detailing the Church just prior to the congregation moving back into the sanctuary.
Dominic profoundly loved his family and surfing. He was deeply respected for his thoughtful persona, magnanimous spirit, tireless work ethic, and endless passion.
A celebration of Dominic's life is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2018. Confirmation of the date and more details including the time of the service will be announced as soon as possible.
Please pray for Dominic's family and friends, especially his wife Leslie, their son Cash, and Leslie's daughter Asia.
O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our brother in Christ, Dominic. We thank you for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; we pray in your most Holy Name. Amen.
Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal graciously with Dominic's family and friends in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come. Amen.

SCHEDULE REMINDER: EARLY SERVICE AT 8AM STARTING APRIL 8TH
|
Starting April 8th, 2018, the early service on Sunday (currently at 7:00AM), will begin at 8:00AM. The later start time will position the early service to better serve a greater number of our ‘Ohana and visitors and potentially grow the service’s attendance in the long run. In the interest of safety, it will allow attendees to commute to church throughout the year during daylight hours. During the sabbatical period, the later start will best accommodate Rev. Mary’s schedule. This change will be in effect through the end of the year (2018).

EMPOWERING WOMEN
Rev. Annalise Castro attending the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women
|
|
The Rev. Annalise Castro Pasalo was selected to be a part of the Presiding Bishop's delegation to attend the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW). The event takes place March 12-23, 2018. Rev. Annalise is the Chaplain at the St. Andrew's Schools in Honolulu. She served as the seminarian at All Saints' in the summer of 2014.
The 17 Episcopal delegates, who represent Curry at the 62nd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women
, are from places such as Venezuela and Puerto Rico, and from Tennessee to Hawaii. They are diverse in age, culture, geography, race and experience. They are gathering with 20 women from 16 Anglican Communion provinces; the Mothers’ Union sent seven women from five provinces.
The theme of this meeting centers on the challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.
In his statement, the Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry said many rural women and girls are leaders in their communities and that “evolving social norms, expanding human rights and increasing numbers of women working outside the home have enhanced their opportunities.” Their leadership is based on “their knowledge of their land, environment, community and culture,” he wrote. However, they still face “challenges, inequalities and beliefs that impede them from further empowering themselves.”
Curry’s statement called on the UN community and civil society to remedy this situation by doing the following:
- Prioritize resources and programs for marginalized groups of rural women and girls,
- Extend access to basic resources and services to rural areas,
- Address environmental concerns and extend land rights, and
- Promote gender equality education and practices and eradicate gender-based violence.

Flowers for All Saints’ Easter Services are made possible by the generous donations of our ‘Ohana. This is a wonderful way to make the church look festive as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and to dedicate a gift in thanksgiving or in memory of someone.
Deadline is Monday, March 26th by noon to be included in the Easter Program. Forms are available online and at the entrance of the Church.

RENOVATION PROJECT UPDATE
New sacristy near completion.
|
|
The restored and enlarged Wilcox/Sloggett Organ at All Saints' will require additional space, which meant that the Church needed to relocate the Sacristy from the north side of the Church to the south side.
Since October, piece-by-piece, a new, larger sacristy has been built. The space features greater storage for both the Altar Guild and worship ministers. The "brain" of the Church's new network and audio/visual center is also housed in the room.
"It is a blessing to have the new sacristy. It will allow the Altar Guild the needed space to carry out their vital ministry," said Rev. Ryan Newman.
"Also, the additional storage space and designated workflow areas will better support those who oversee the worship life of the congregation."

THIS WEEK IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
March 18th: Jesus' Hour Has Come
|
|
John 1212-13:38: As Jesus enters Jerusalem before the Passover, a great crowd comes out to give Jesus a royal welcome, meeting him with branches of palm trees. At the beginning of Chapter 13, Jesus leads his disciples into the upper room for what we now call the “Last Supper.”
Before supper, Jesus begins to wash his disciples’ feet, as a slave would do. Peter resists, but Jesus insists, showing his disciples that this act of humility and servanthood must also be done by them for others.
Then Jesus gives notice that one of the disciples will betray him to the authorities, and then Judas leaves to do just that. Left with the remaining faithful disciples, Jesus begins to say his farewell to them, his friends. For children, the most important is his “New Commandment” in 13:31-35 “that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”
Peter evidently perceives that Jesus is going away and insists that he will follow his Lord and will lay down his life for Jesus. Jesus then foretells that Peter will deny knowing Jesus before morning comes.
“Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” ( John 13:34). In these simple words, Jesus tells us the way to union with the Divine—with the Father. In the Gospel of John, Jesus doesn’t talk much about “the kingdom of heaven” or “the kingdom of God.” What Jesus does talk about is being with the Father and going to the Father.
How can we be with Jesus’ Father? Through Jesus himself. In his dialogue with the disciples, he makes clear that the way to the Father is through himself, and it is by being, or abiding, in Jesus that we can be in God. As Jesus says, “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.” (13:10)
So the place where Jesus is leading us is not a “place” like “heaven” but an “abiding” in the Godhead, who is Jesus, his Father, and the Holy Spirit. And how do we abide in God? By loving the way Jesus loves us. So this is our new commandment, given by Christ himself, to be the call for the new family of God: Love one another as he loves us.

IN BRIEF . . .
These news briefs were featured in previous issues of "The Epistle"

EMERGENCY PASTORAL CARE
There are now two new ways to request emergency pastoral care. Beginning March 1, 2018,
All Saints’ established an Emergency Pastoral Care Phone Number that is available 24 hours a day. Whenever you have a need for support, please call (650) 691-8104 and leave a voice mail. The system will immediately forward the information to the Pastoral Care Committee who will respond to each request. In order to ensure that your need gets a timely response, it is important
not to call Rev. Ryan’s or Rev. Mary’s cell, if you have those numbers. The new pastoral emergency system utilizes the entire committee not just our clergy to make sure we respond as quickly as possible even in the rare instance that a member of the clergy is not available. If you prefer, you may send an electronic pastoral care request via email to
pastoralcare@allsaintskauai.org.
PRAYER CHAIN MINISTRY
To better protect the privacy of those we are praying for and to improve the communication standards of the
Prayer Chain Ministry, All Saints' announced some changes starting March 1, 2018.
Individuals who want to participate in the Prayer Chain Ministry must re-enroll to continue receiving the email communications. To re-enroll, please visit the newly established
Pastoral Care web page or contact the Church Office at (808) 822-4267. The new process will be supported by technology and not dependent on one individual to maintain the entire flow of information. Also, the updated process will provide for greater privacy protection.
SUBMITTING A PRAYER REQUEST
Prayer requests will now be
submitted online or by contacting the Church Office at (808) 822-4267. Those submitting the prayer request will continue to be allowed to submit detailed information; however, that information will be treated as confidential and will only be shared with the Pastoral Care Committee. The Prayer Chain Ministry, will receive an abbreviated email containing only the name of the person for whom they are to pray for and the “general” nature of their need (i.e. healing, thanksgiving, etc.)
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
As a congregation each Sunday, we pray for those in need by name during the Prayers of the People. During the discussions of the newly formed Pastoral Care Committee, it became evident that we needed to standardize and publicize a guide for including names in the Prayers of the People petitions. Names can be added to the Prayers of the People petitions by utilizing the
Prayer Chain Request form
or by contacting the Church Office at (808) 822-4267. Names will remain in the Prayers of the People for a maximum of four Sundays before a name must be resubmitted. Public petitions can always be offered during the appropriate time during the Prayers of the People when we pray for “those we name silently or aloud.”
LAUNDRY LOVE
All Saints' offers the
Laundry Love ministry the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 5:00PM - 8:30PM at the Kapaa Laundromat in the Kapaa Shopping Center.
The ministry needs more volunteers especially for Team A and Team B. Volunteers do not need to members of the Church. Volunteers wash, dry, and fold patrons' laundry. Each session, All Saints' does 70-90 loads of free laundry for the community. No laundry experience required! For more information,
visit here. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the above dates, please email the
Laundry Love Leaders. Please consider volunteering one of the following dates: March 21, April 4, April 18, May 2, May 16, June 6, and June 20.
UPCOMING BAPTISMS
The next scheduled date for Baptisms at All Saints' will be Saturday, March 31st at 7:00PM during the Easter Vigil Service. Baptisms at the Easter Vigil is one of the most ancient and sacred traditions of the Christian Church. Parents/Guardians who are interested in their child being baptized or adults seeking baptism are asked to attend a Baptism Preparation Class, Sunday, March 18
th at 8:30AM – 9:15AM in Memorial Hall. For more info, speak to
Rev. Ryan.
HOME COMMUNION FOR SICK AND SHUT-INS
All Saints’ Eucharistic Visitors are available each Sunday (pending availability) to bring Communion to those who are sick or shut-in. Requests for a Eucharistic visitation can be made by calling the Church Office at (808) 822-4267 or emailing
homecommunion@allsaintskauai.org.
|
TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY
In the near future, the Pastoral Care Ministries of All Saints’ would like to establish a ministry offering transportation to services and events for our ‘Ohana who cannot drive or cannot drive at night. If you would be interested in volunteering for this future ministry, please email
pastoralcare@allsaintskauai.org or call the Church Office at (808) 822-4267.
