A Message from the Superintendent
|
I hope you will be able to join us this weekend for the Lovejoy High School production of the Sound of Music. I promise the show will be incredible, and you will leave saying that it is unbelievable a student performance is this good. Hannah Hansen, LHS Senior, will play the part of Maria and LHS Senior, Jack Supan, will play the part of Captain von Trapp. The von Trapp children are played by LISD students in grades 4-11. Student recognitions abound in this edition with our PTA Reflections winners, All-State band winners, Cheer team state performance, as well as the students who made All-State choir. Also, our varsity girls' basketball team is undefeated as they move through the second half of district play. I am truly #lovejoyproud.

The National PTA Reflections program encourages students of all ages and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Through the program, National PTA, Lovejoy Local and Council PTAs, and PTAs across the country invite students in Preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works. March 6, 2018 is the date for the Texas primary elections. Early voting begins on February 20, 2018. If you are not registered or need to make an address change due to a move, February 5, 2018 is the last day to register and be eligible to vote in the March 6th election.

Lovejoy High School Music Theatre
Presents The Sound of Music
Climb every mountain, ford every stream, and follow every rainbow to Lovejoy High School to see Lovejoy High School Performing Arts' musical The Sound of Music. The musical is considered one of the masterpieces of modern musical theatre and marked the culmination of the epic Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration. It will be presented January 18th - 20th at 7:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School Auditorium.
Based on a true story in 1938 in the town of Salzburg, Austria, The Sound of Music is a story of love, family, and a life with music. Maria (played by Senior, Hannah Hansen), a young postulant, is too high-spirited for the religious life of a nun, so she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp (Senior, Jack Supan), a family which Maria slowly begins to fill with joy, laughter and music.
The Sound of Music
is a show for everyone, and includes beautiful inspirational music and characters whom audiences will adore, such as Captain von Trapp's "wealthy and sophisticated" would-be fiancée Baroness Elsa Schräder (Senior, Raegan Vaughn); the von Trapp children: Liesl (Junior, Marcie Sawyers), Friedrich (Willow Springs 8th Grader, Aidan Abramson), Louisa (Freshman, Grace Felton), Brigitta (Freshman, Catherine O'Brien), Kurt (Sloan Creek 5th Grader, Brock Bernal), Marta (Sloan Creek 5th Grader, Rachel Dobbs), and Gretl (Puster Elementary 4th Grader, Sophie Brooks); as well as Captain von Trapp's great friend and music producer, Max Detweiler (Sophomore, Zachary Joyner).
The Sound of Music
offers beloved and iconic songs such as "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Edelweiss," and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," filling the show and audience with both heart-warming and heart-wrenching emotion for this timeless classic.

Lovejoy High School Band
Eleven Lovejoy High School Band students competed in the final round of the Texas All State Auditions this past Saturday at Berkner High School in Richardson. All Lovejoy High School students finished at the very top of their audition rooms. Out of those students, Sarah Jahnke (Flute) and Patrick O'Brien (Trumpet) have been named Texas All-State Band Members. The students will travel to San Antonio in February to perform in the All State Band.

Lovejoy High School Cheer
The Lovejoy High School Cheer UIL Spirit Squad competed on Friday, January 12th in the State UIL Spirit cheer competition 5A-Division 2. There were over 60 high schools represented. The cheerleaders earned a 7th place preliminary placement with their competitive routines in band dance, crowd cheer and fight song. The cheerleaders went on to compete in the finals, where they performed a 3 minute showcase which included a crowd response call from the judges for a football season play. The Lovejoy UIL Spirit Squad finished in 12th place overall in the state for 5A-Division 2 high schools. Congratulations to the cheerleaders on this tremendous accomplishment.

Lovejoy High School Choir
Congratulations to the 2017-2018 All-State Choir members from Lovejoy High School. Over 60,000 students participate in the All-State process across the state. The following students were among the top 6 of their voice parts in our very competitive Area.

Lovejoy Boys Basketball
Last week, the Lovejoy Freshmen Boys basketball team had another win against Mesquite Poteet. The Leopards held them scoreless in the second quarter, and went on to win the game 80-23, moving to 4-0 in district. The team played a great game against Royse City Friday night holding Royse city to only 8 first-half points. The Leopards went on to defeat Royse City 62-28, advancing to 5-0 in district. The freshmen also hosted the Scots of Highland Park and came away with a 57-47 win. The freshmen will be in action this Friday against the West Mesquite Wranglers. Game time is 5:30 PM.
A sluggish start by the JV Red team set the stage for a spirited second half which allowed them to pull away from Plano Williams on Tuesday night for the eventual 30-17 victory. The Leopards struggled from the FT line going 4 for 9, but made up on the defensive end, only allowing a combined 4 points in the 1st and 3rd quarters. The JV Red lost a close game to the Scots of Highland Park last night 49-44. The JV Red will be back in action on Saturday, January 20th at McKinney North at 12 noon.
The JV Black Leopards beat Poteet at home 42-24 with a great defense, holding The Pirates to only 24 points for the game. The Junior Varsity basketball team is now 4-0 in district. The Leopards started slow in the first quarter, but outscored the Royse City bulldogs by 21 in the ensuing 3 quarters to win 53-34, bringing their district record to 5-0. The JV Black lost a tough game last night to Highland Park 51-19. The Leopards travel this Friday to West Mesquite to take on the Wranglers. Game time is 5:30 PM.
The Varsity Leopards had another tough week of 15-5A play. The Leopards got behind early to the Pirates of Mesquite Poteet, but battled hard, closing the margin to 3 points in the third quarter, only to fall 60-46. The Varsity traveled to Royse City for a Friday night contest where the Leopards lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Bulldogs 55-51. The Leopards were back home last night to take on the Scotts from Highland Park and lost a tough match 51-41. The Varsity will travel to West Mesquite this Friday to take on the Wranglers at 7:00 PM.

Lovejoy Girls Basketball
The JV Red team improved their district record to 2-1 with a win over Mesquite Poteet last Tuesday by a score of 50-35. On Friday, the JV Red lost a tough game to Bishop Lynch by a score of 39-22. The JV Red traveled to Highland Park to continue 15-5A District play on Tuesday night, January 16, losing 49-44 in a close match-up.
The JV Black team finished the first round of district play last week with a perfect 7-0 record by defeating Mesquite Poteet by a score of 53-35 and Royse City by a score of 55-36.
The Varsity team also went undefeated in the first round of district play as they defeated Mesquite Poteet by a score of 52-47 and Royse City by a score of 71-53. The Varsity Lady Leopards are a perfect 7-0 in District. The second round of district play starts this week, with games on Tuesday at Highland Park and Friday at home vs West Mesquite.

Lovejoy Golf
The Leopard Men's Varsity Golf Team competed at the Four Seasons in the Jaguar Invitational hosted by Flower Mound High School. Despite plans for a two day event to be played January 15th and 16th, Tuesday's weather forced officials to trim the competition to only one day. The guys shot a 342 team total, which was good for 9th place out of 16 teams. Freshman Jay Pabin shot 81 to lead the Leopards. Senior Will Fairchild followed with an 82.
Allie Bianchi
competed as an individual to represent the women, ending the day with a top 10 finish, shooting an 82.

Lovejoy Boys Soccer
The Junior Varsity boys went 2-1 in the Allen Eagles Showcase, winning 1-0 over Hillcrest in the first game. In their second game, the boys were victorious over McKinney with a score of 2-0. In their final game vs Irving, the JV squad suffered their first loss of the season 3-1.
The Varsity boys went 1-1-1 in the Allen Eagles Showcase, bringing their current record to 3-1-2. In their first game vs Hillcrest, the Leopards won 4-1 on a very cold and windy night. In their second game, the varsity boys suffered their first loss of the season, going 2-0 against McKinney. In looking to rebound, the boys played Irving in their final game in what was an intense match, with the Leopards scoring in the final seconds of the game to tie the game 1-1.
The Leopards look to defend their 15-5A District Championship against the Highland Park Scots at home on Tuesday, January 30th. Game time is scheduled for 5:30PM JV and 7:30PM for Varsity.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
The Lovejoy Varsity girls soccer team competed in the Colleyville Heritage Tournament this past weekend. Despite freezing temperatures, they were able to pick up their first win of the season Friday night against the perennial playoff powerhouse, Colleyville. In an intense game, the Leopards won 1-0 with an incredible goal by Senior Taylor Thompson. On Saturday, the girls were defeated by a strong team from The Colony. The Girls Soccer team will travel to Georgetown to compete in the prestigious "Governor's Cup" Tournament. This tournament features some of the top teams in the state of Texas. Lovejoy Swim and Dive
The Lovejoy Leopards will be competing this Saturday in the 12-5A District Swim and Dive Meet, held at Rodenbaugh Natatorium in Allen, beginning with the diving competition at 8:45 AM and the swimming competition at 10:15 AM. We hope you will make plans to attend and support our Wet Leopards Swim and Dive Team.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Leopard Tennis team will open their Spring season on January 24th at the Grapevine Tournament. Results from this tournament will be in next week's email express. Best wishes to the Leopards.

Lovejoy Track
The Lovejoy Track and Field teams competed in the 2018 Arkansas High School Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday, January 13. Lovejoy had a record number, 47 athletes, who competed in this year's meet. Several athletes set personal records and also broke two school records. Ryan Spruell, Ryan Brands, William Muirheard, and Brady Laboret set a new school record in the Boys 4X800M Relay, with a time of 8:21.01. Ryan Gordon also set a new school record in the Boys 60M Dash with a time of 7.12. Ryan Brands set a new school record in the 3000M with a time of 9:04.49. Complete results may be found by

Lovejoy Wrestling
The men's varsity wrestled three duals this past Thursday night, finishing with 2 wins to push their dual record to 6-4 for the year, and 2-1 in district. The Leopards were led by Freshman Jakob Underwood, Sophomore David Gold, and Senior James Ayers. All three wrestlers finished the night with 3-0 records. Underwood and Gold finished the night with two pins apiece.
The varsity women wrestled individuals from Newman Smith and Melissa as well. Juniors Lilly Musselman and Morgan Elvin both finished 2-0, while freshman Charis Vela and sophomore Katherine Heath went 1-1 each.
The Men and Women will host a duals match against Carrollton Creekview and Carrollton Newman Smith at Sloan Creek Main Gym tomorrow evening beginning at 5:00 PM.

Lovejoy K-6 Talent Show
The Lovejoy High School Junior Class invites Lovejoy K - 6 students to register for its upcoming fundraiser talent show. The show will take place Thursday, February 15th at 5:30 PM at Lovejoy High School in the auditorium, with rehearsals on Thursday, February 8th at 5:00 PM. The cost for single acts to perform is $25, and group acts are $50. Admission to the event is free. All proceeds will go to support Prom.

Late Night Leopards - Campus Campouts
An exciting new event will be held at the elementary campuses this spring: Late Night Leopards - Campus Campouts. This event will accomplish two things: Campus Campouts will provide a memorable experience for the parents and students at the elementary level, and will also generate funds through business sponsors and a camp fee. The funds raised from this event will help to replace state funding lost from the last legislative session. If you know of a business which would have interest in sponsoring a portion of this event at any or all of the campuses, please contact the appropriate campus principal:

Toy Drive

The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. Free Girls Lacrosse Try-It Practices
January 22nd and January 24th
Lovejoy Lacrosse will host two free try-it practices for all Lovejoy girls in grades K - 8. The practices will be held on Monday, January 22nd (at Lovejoy High School), and Wednesday, January 24th (at Willow Springs Middle School). The try-it practice times will be as follows for both days:
Kinder/2nd graders
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
3rd/4th graders
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
5th/6th graders
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
7th/8th graders
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Lovejoy High School Band Mattress Sale Fundraiser
February 10th
The Lovejoy High School Band will be hosting its 1st annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser on February 10th from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School Band Hall.
Do you need to replace a bed in your home? Know someone who does? There will be over 30 bed styles on display for customers to try. The beds are new, brand name, made to order, available in all sizes, and cost less than retail stores. In addition to beds, there will also be pillows, mattress protectors, sheets, and adjustable power bases. Financing options will also be available.

24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition

Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. It is a prestigious honor for these students to have their work selected to hang among the halls of contemporary and historic masterpieces in an exhibition demonstrating the most extraordinary work created within AP Studio Art programs from ten of the areas highest performing high schools.

Relay for Life: April 6
Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
Relay for Life is an annual event held at Lovejoy High School to raise awareness of cancer and donate to cancer research. This year's initiative is to bring the Lovejoy community together as a whole to promote a sense of community and care. The entire Lovejoy community is invited to participate in this event on April 6, 2018.
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may

to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
We hope you will save the date of April 6th and join us for Relay for Life.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Lovejoy High School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10.
