School Safety
As a school and as a district, we take the safety of all our students and staff very seriously. Hillview follows The Big Five, San Mateo County's school safety protocols, available here. We practice each of the Big Five drills over the course of the school year. We have done Shelter in Place, Secure Campus, and Evacuation so far, and our next drill will be the Lockdown/Barricade drill. The Lockdown/Barricade protocol would be used in the event of an immediate threat of danger on campus. This drill will take place on Tuesday, March 20 in the afternoon. Our teachers and staff were trained by Officer Ferguson, our School Resource Officer, and she and the Menlo Park Police Department will support us at Hillview as we complete our drill. Over Hawk Talk in the two weeks before the drill, we will be giving students important information about our upcoming drill and campus safety. In light of the recent events in Parkland, FL, several important publications are available for your information. The San Mateo County Office of Education released a statement here. The Atherton Chief of Police wrote an open letter to the community here.
Washington D.C. Trip Participants - Mandatory Meeting
Tuesday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m., Hillview PAC. Eighth-grade students and families participating in the Washington, D.C. trip are required to attend this meeting. Students, and at least one parent, must attend. We will review the schedule of activities, outline expectations and safety rules, collect baggage fees, issue identification and luggage tags, collect and inspect medications, and much more. Plan to attend this important meeting.
Action Required! Parents of Current 6th-Grade Students
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Tdap Vaccination. Students entering 7th grade in the 2018 - 2019 school year are required by law to provide proof of a whooping cough booster or Tdap shot (Td does not meet the requirement). Students will not be admitted to school if proof is not received before the first day of school.
Bring an updated copy of your child's immunization record showing proof of Tdap to the school office now. Do not mark or highlight this record. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, you are required to provide the school with a doctor's written statement. The information required in this statement may be found in the FAQ section on the Shots for School web site (see link below.)
Acceptable proof of immunization includes:
- Print-out or copy of immunization record from your child's clinic or physician's office
- A copy of the yellow immunization record
- A certification of Tdap booster notice from your child's clinic, physician's office or pharmacy
- All these documents must have your child's name, date of birth, date Tdap was administered, and a stamp or physician's signature from the clinic

was approved at the School Board meeting February 13. Elementary parent/teacher conference dates will take place in December; this
conferencing model was used by the district in years past. By December, teachers have more information and believe it is a more valuable time to discuss your student's school experience with you.

Topics include the evolving digital landscape and current trends, emotional and psychological responses to social media, responding to challenging issues such as techno-perfection, digital distraction, sleep, and sexting; strategies to engage your teen with constructive conversation and promote media balance for the entire family. You'll come away with strategies that support both you and your child.

Hillview Service Team
Service Team Meeting
Thursday, March 8, lunchtime, PAC. Our guest speaker, Greta Aschbacher from The Fit Kids Foundation, will talk about the exciting physical activity programs that Fit Kids provides to underserved students in our area. Greta will also get Hillview students moving with some Fit Kids activities. Students and parents welcome!
Sports Equipment Drive
March 12 - 16, place in bins at Hillview PAC. Donate gently used sports equipment (soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, footballs, bats, volleyballs, nets, cleats, shorts, old uniforms, gym shoes, etc.). Your contributions will be assisting fellow youth in your area, helping them enjoy more active and healthy lives.
After-School Basketball League Playoffs
The 6th-grade girls ended their season last week with the Gaetano/Bass/Fisher team beating the Sanie/Budinger team in round one of playoffs. The game was extremely exciting. Budinger/Sanie made a great comeback to lose by only two points.
We congratulate and thank the 6th-grade girls basketball team for their efforts in league finals. The game was one of the most competitive to date. The lead switched teams at least eight times. In the end, La Entrada won by one point, scoring the winning basketball with less than a minute to go. The team was coached by Nino Gaetano, Jeff Fisher, and Carla Johnson-Bass. We thank players, coaches, and parents for a super exciting season.
We are entering the first round of playoffs for 6th-grade boys, 7th-grade boys, and all 8th-grade teams. Playoffs this week:
- Monday - all 8th-grade teams, 1st-round games at Hillview, La Entrada, and Woodside Elementary
- Wednesday - 6th-grade boys, 1st-round games at Arrillaga
- Friday - 7th-grade boys, 1st-round games at Arrillaga

After-School Tennis Program
Team tryouts are now finished. All players have been placed on teams. Official practice begins this week. Players should have selected their two permanent practice slots for each week. Hillview will host matches on Wednesdays and Fridays. The season extends through mid-May.

MPAEF is seeking a part-time Office Administrator who is passionate about education and believes in the value of providing excellent public-school education. The Office Administrator's primary role is to execute the daily operations of the organization, including donor tracking and management, finance, event coordination, outreach, and communications. This is a part-time, temporary paid position that will work in tandem with a second part-time Office Administrator who is already on staff at the Foundation. Parent Ed, "Bullying: Signs, Signals, Technology, and Tips," March 6, 7:00 - 8 :30 p.m., SafeSpace Community Engagement Center, 708 Oak Grove Ave. This next free (donations appreciated) workshop will include insights and lived experiences shared from a panel of teens from our SafeSpace Youth Advisory board. There will be questions and answers and tips on how to support your child through challenging social interactions, including social media interactions. Taught by Danielle Kelmar LCSW, SafeSpace Clinical Youth Mental Health Specialist, Lesley Martin, Ed.D, SafeSpace Managing Director, and members of the SafeSpace Youth Advisory Board. Register here.

Camp MAC, July 30 - August 3, Palo Alto High School, Paly's distinguished journalism program will be returning again this summer with its third year of Camp MAC (Media Arts Center). New campers will learn a variety of journalistic skills, including critical thinking, research, graphic design, and expository writing techniques.
