Genetics May Impact Kids' Taste for Certain Foods

In the ongoing quest to improve nutrition and reduce childhood obesity, Canadian researchers have learned that your child's preference for crackers, cookies, or veggies to snack on could be linked to genetics.
University of Guelph researchers investigated whether genetic variants in taste receptors related to sweet preference, fat taste sensitivity, and aversion to bitter green leafy vegetables influence the snacks chosen by preschoolers.

Guidelines for Managing and ID'ing Adolescent Depression Updated

Clinical practice guidelines have been updated to assist primary care (PC) physicians in the screening, treatment, and management of adolescent depression in youth aged 10 to 21 years. The details of the updates are presented in two reports published online Feb. 26 in Pediatrics.
Rachel A. Zuckerbrot, M.D., from the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, and colleagues updated guidelines relating to identification and initial management of adolescent depression. The athors note that the guidelines include recommendations

'Social Brain' Networks Altered at Young Age

As infants develop, they preferentially move towards and respond to social cues - such as voices, faces and human gestures. At the same time, their brain develops a network of regions that specialize in translating these cues, known as the 'social brain'. However, a common observation in infants later diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is reduced sensitivity and attention towards these social cues during the first year of life. This apparent indifference to social cues is thought to ultimately hinder the normal development of the social brain at early developmental stages. A team of researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, now brings direct evidence of this hindered development during the toddler to pre-school years in autism. Their findings are published in the journal eLife.

Pediatricians Call For Universal Depression Screening For Teens

Only about 50 percent of adolescents with depression get diagnosed before reaching adulthood. And as many as 2 in 3 depressed teens don't get the care that could help them.
"It's a huge problem," says Dr. Rachel Zuckerbrot, a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist and associate professor at Columbia University.
To address this divide, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued updated guidelines this week that call for universal screening for depression.

Range of Unhealthy Behaviors in Youth Linked to Obesity

New research suggests that health promotion experts have their hands full as they attempt to combat obesity. University of Waterloo investigators discovered an expansive scope - much more than just a focus on eating habits - is necessary to keep the pounds off.
Investigators discovered that among youth, a combination of unhealthy behaviors serves as the best predictors of whether or not young people will experience obesity issues in adulthood. The study concluded that public health efforts focusing on obesity prevention must identify and correct poor behaviors that often develop in early childhood.

Repeated Anesthesia in Primates Increases Anxiety-Linked Behavior

Rhesus macaques repeatedly exposed to anesthesia during infancy display persistent anxiety-linked behaviors later in life in response to social stress, a study from Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai shows.

These creative accommodations are great ways to support kids who struggle with written expression.
If you're a parent, teacher, or therapist, chances are that you know at least a kid or two who struggles with written expression.
For these kids, looking at a blank worksheet, journal page, or test paper can be totally overwhelming. They might they might attempt handwriting assignments like these, only to realize that they can't keep up with their peers. Or maybe they can complete the assignment but they fall short when it comes to spacing, sizing, alignment, or letter formation.

Except for her family and closest friends, no one in Jennifer's various circles knows that she is on the spectrum. Jennifer was not diagnosed with autism until she was 45 - and then only because she wanted confirmation of what she had figured out for herself over the previous decade. Most of her life, she says, she evaded a diagnosis by forcing herself to stop doing things her parents and others found strange or unacceptable.
