VIDEO: Vista's Shark Tank competition helps non-profit organizations
Video & article by Rida Anjum, FCUSD Communication Intern

On Dec. 7, young
entrepreneurs at Vista del Lago High  - students in a Peer Leadership Class taught by Janice Johnson - competed in a competition similar to ABC's business show, "Shark Tank," for a $5,000 community grant focusing on improvements in the Folsom community.

The judges panel included: Superintendent Dr. Sarah Koligian and Board Member Sarah Aquino, Folsom Councilman Roger Gaylord, Intel Vice President Dave Aubin, and SAFE Federal Credit Union Community and Advocacy Engagement Manager Amanda Merz.

The student team, "Nice Tice" had the winning idea and business plan. Nice Tice presented the idea of specially remodeled parking meters that would be to collect voluntary donations for Powerhouse Ministries and other local non-profit organizations.

More than just a number: Understand how schools are doing
California has launched a new online resource that gives families and community members a better idea of how our public schools are performing. At Folsom Cordova, we want to make sure everyone who has a stake in the quality of our schools understands how to use this resource to make informed decisions.

Remember the Academic Performance Index, or API? The single number, based primarily on test scores, that for years we used to rate and rank public schools?  That's gone.

The new system, called the California School Dashboard, doesn't rely just on test scores to tell you how a school is doing. It also gives you detailed information on graduation rates, suspension rates, English learner progress, and more. Are schools that have challenges making changes to improve student success? Are historically high-performing schools improving outcomes for all students? The dashboard gives you much more information to help answer those questions.

Visit www.fcusd.org/dashboard - there's a video tutorial and answer to common questions - to learn more about the new resource. Then take some time in the driver's seat to explore Folsom Cordova schools!

Vote for Sutter Middle STEM Program in the Follett Challenge
Sutter Middle School has entered a national education contest called the Follett Challenge by showing off their STEM program in a video in hopes of earning one of the 13 cash prizes for the school to enhance their STEM program.

Video voting runs from Jan. 22-26. You can register to vote for Sutter's video on the Follett Challenge website. Once you register you are allowed to vote once per day for the video.

"We hope our community will support us by viewing our video and voting for our submission," said Debbie Krikourian STEM Academy Teacher.

Krikourian said winning the Follett Challege would give her school additional resources for their STEM program and give them a platform to share their innovation with other schools across the country and world.

Follett, a global education solutions leader, will award $60,000 to the grand prize winner, plus a celebration at the winning school. Two semi-finalists will be awarded $10,000 each. Ten People's Choice Awards worth $8,000 each will also be awarded.

Schools will be judged on applications that illustrate critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration between students, teachers and other school staff. The 2018 Grand Prize winner will be announced on April 27, while the other awards will be announced Feb. 28.
District updates School Choice, Inter-district Transfer guidelines
Folsom Cordova's Board of Education recently has approved changes to the District's guidelines for considering School Choice and Inter-district Transfer requests that will impact applications for the 2018-19 school year.

What's new:  The most significant change is that we will now consider new Inter-district Transfer Permits (ITP) into our Folsom secondary schools if space is available, and only after accommodating school choice requests first.

Note:  For 2018-19, we only expect Folsom High School and Folsom Middle School to have available capacity. Vista del Lago High and Sutter Middle are not expected to have any extra capacity for at least the next school year.

Choice timeline:  Choice deadline will be Jan. 26 so that we can better project and plan capacity and staffing needs earlier in the spring.

These changes were made during  close  and ongoing review of our enrollment projections, giving us the flexibility to manage school capacity well into the future without having to make disruptive policy changes each year. This action also ensures that families living in our school and District boundaries are accommodated first, while continuing to provide households outside of our boundaries an opportunity to participate in our outstanding programs if space is available.

American River Canyon households:  Folsom Cordova will treat American River Canyon families living in the shared area with San Juan Unified as "FCUSD resident students" to Carl Sundahl Elementary, Sutter Middle School, and Folsom High School. Families will first need to initiate the Inter-district Transfer request from San Juan Unified to request to attend Folsom Cordova Unified.
