Darkness is scary. I have always felt that the worst of the first nine plagues (the tenth which involved loss of life is obviously different) was Choshech. Darkness represents everything we fear, everything that is wrong in life. Have you ever been up in the middle of the night all alone and felt that inner fear of loneliness and despair?

One can only imagine how much more terrifying this was in Mitzrayim where Chazal tell us that the darkness was even physically felt by the Egyptians. It was so thick that people could not move!

Often when we are enveloped in darkness or in a state of being negative, we feel paralyzed as if there is nowhere to go. The hardest thing to do is see any sort of light.

The good news is that every night has its daybreak and even the worst plagues have their endings. One has to hold out and maintain even a modicum of hope that things will improve.
