Oldest & Largest Antique Car Club in the World
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor, szimmerman@aaca.org

Did you know that AACA is the oldest and largest antique car club in the world? With over 60,000 members in 53 countries, you are bound to run into another AACA member wherever you go!

Whenever I mention where I work, inevitably I hear responses like "oh, my dad was an AACA member" or "I think my neighbor belongs to that club." The other summer my husband and I went to a Carrie Underwood concert in Allentown, PA, and introduced ourselves to the couple sitting next to us. The small talk of jobs came up and wouldn't you know - they were AACA members. People always say to me that must be a pretty cool place to work - why yes it is! And you know what makes it so cool? Believe it or not, it's not the cars. It's the people I work with on a daily basis and it's our members!

Since 1935, AACA has had one goal: The preservation and enjoyment of automotive history of all types. From National Meets and Tours to Regional events, AACA is here to bring enthusiasts together to celebrate this wonderful hobby. The AACA staff, our Board of Directors and all of the Region/Chapter leaders work tirelessly every day to make this organization what it is.

You should be proud to be part of such an awesome club so dedicated to the hobby and its members! Thank you to every single one of our members for supporting the hobby and AACA with everything you do - from attending events to mentioning the AACA in conversations to mentoring the younger generation to simply wearing an AACA hat or t-shirt. It's because of everything YOU do that AACA can make that bold statement above... WE are the oldest and largest antique car club in the world! (I'd add "best" too, but I'm a little partial!)
8th Annual Collector Car Appreciation Day

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced that the next Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) will be celebrated on July 14, 2017. The date will mark the eighth consecutive commemoration in what is now an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

"The U.S. Senate first recognized Collector Car Appreciation Day in 2010 at our request and helped launch this annual event," said SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. "As we prepare for the eighth celebration of our nation's automotive heritage, enthusiasts and related businesses are already planning open houses, car cruises, club gatherings and educational events to commemorate the day."

SEMA and AACA encourage all AACA Regions and Chapters to participate throughout the month of July to honor the classics of the past and the future. Check out SEMA's video PSA for tips on setting up your tribute.

CELEBRATE THE HOBBY YOUR WAY!
  • ATTEND an official vehicle-inspired event
  • HOST your own gathering or club meeting
  • Promote a "HOLIDAY SALE" at your business
  • DRIVE your special ride, new or old, whatever the destination
Plan and submit your July event at no cost, locate a listing near you and more on the SEMA website . Participating organizers will be awarded a copy of the Congressional resolution for display at each registered event.

Member Submitted Story

Little Honda (600 Sedan)
By Joe Bigley, Wilmington, NC, jbigley409@gmail.com

During the summer of 1972, my '63 Dodge Dart (slant 6 with push button automatic) was rusting away from salty New Jersey roads and giving me grief. I had $1,500 saved to upgrade to a classier car. I really wanted a '66 GTO, but I was halfway through college and thought "maybe not." I'd love a new car, but was unimpressed with Vegas and Pintos (about $2,200) and VW Beetles started at $1,900.

One day, my future wife Stephanie and I saw a really small car parked in a Thom McAnn shoe store. I found out it was a Honda car. It had front wheel drive, and an air-cooled 2-cylinder, aluminum engine promising 36 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (not a good idea). This was the year before Honda introduced the 4-cylinder Civic. I made fun of its tiny size and the lack of power (one-tenth of my desired GTO). Then I saw the window sticker: $1,473. Hmmm.....

I went to the Chevy/Honda dealer, test drove it and ordered one. Not everyone thought this purchase was a good idea. My WWII veteran uncles had strong opinions about Japanese cars, plus it was TINY and I was not. Oh well.

The car came with a 6.9 gallon gas tank. It cost me $1.90 to fill it with regular. It delivered a solid 40 mpg, which was envious during the 1973 fuel crisis. My only regret was that gas stations allowed a purchase of a maximum of 10 gallons and I couldn't take that much.

Putting the seat all the way back allowed me to drive it with acceptable discomfort. Not knowing any double-leg amputees, I took out the back seat & laid down shag carpet tiles in the rear to increase hauling capacity. Passengers didn't always appreciate crawling in the back & sitting on carpet tiles - truly unsafe at any speed.

I took a lot of grief about the car. I worked part time at Sears and "friends" would rotate the car 90 degrees in its parking space. I couldn't get out if the adjacent spaces were filled. Its listed top speed was 75 mph, but I found myself going 83 mph once when I dozed off driving home from a job loading trucks all night.

The Honda lasted about 4 years and 48,000 miles. Then the engine seized. It had mostly highway miles while it was probably best for slow speed city use. A friend wanted to rebuild the engine & restore it, so I traded him the Honda for a new tennis racquet. Sadly, the Honda went up in flames along with everything else in the guy's house when he inadvisably started a fire in his fireplace with gasoline.

These cars have become collector items of sorts. I saw one for sale at the Charlotte Autofair car corral last year for $10,000. No, I was not tempted!!

Share Your Stories in Speedster

We want to hear from you! We are always looking to feature articles from AACA members in Speedster. We'd love to share your personal accounts of tours and shows you have attended, restoration projects, unique vehicle stories and history, and any other stories you think other AACA members would enjoy hearing about.

Why Should My Region Host a National Meet or Tour?
By Don Barlup, VP National Activities, pullman1914@aol.com

While we all enjoy the interaction with our local Region members, there is a lot to see and do outside of our immediate area. One hundred or more years ago, most of our ancestors were unable to venture far from their familiar surroundings. Transportation, or should I say the lack of it, kept them close to home. Flash forward to 2017. You name the place, pull out your credit card and, usually within 24 hours, you can be there.

As a Region member, we enjoy visiting our fellow members at the many national meets and tours that we choose to attend each year. But, we can only participate in these meets and tours if you and your fellow members invite us.

Planning a meet or tour is what you make of it. It can bring a Region together, involve many members, encourage new members and bolster your treasury. Help is available from your National Club and Directors. We will provide seed money, if needed (to be repaid), a registration chairperson and a liaison to help you with the process. We can even provide a chief judge for your National meet. We will help with your meet or tour brochure and registration materials. Free ads and articles in Antique Automobile magazine and the Speedster e-newsletter are also available to aid in the promotion of the event.

Your National Club has openings for National meets and tours from 2018 forward. Be part of the fun and let us show you how beneficial it can be to host a National event in your hometown!

If interested, contact Don Barlup, VP National Activities,
at pullman1914@aol.com or call 717-877-4766.

We Now Have a Booth at a Local Antique Mall!

Spring has proven to be an action-packed season here at the library. If you read the latest issue of Antique Automobile, you'll know we received two massive collections - the Cars and Parts library and Mark Theisen racing collection. This month also witnessed the introduction of our booth at Black Swan Antiquities, a massive antique mall in nearby Palmyra, PA.

The space for the booth was generously donated to us by Black Swan Antiquities. The antique mall charges a small commission on sales (which is very reasonable), with all remaining proceeds benefiting the AACA Library. When you visit our booth, you will find a plethora of automotive knickknacks, including car parts, tools, books, sales literature and more. Our first sale was a 1980s Fisher Price service station!

An added benefit of our booth is that it will help spread the word about AACA and the AACA Library. Black Swan Antiquities allowed us to put up banners and signs. We also have a spot for brochures, membership applications and event flyers.

We are thrilled to be working together with Black Swan Antiquities, which has a strong reputation among both its vendors and customers. The staff is extremely friendly, and their selection is huge! If you love vintage items, you could easily spend an entire day browsing all the aisles. (At some point, we plan on doing a video to show you what it's like.)

If you enjoy buying books at the library or through our eBay store, don't worry; those won't be going away anytime soon. Our booth is a way of opening up sales of duplicate materials to a wider audience while simultaneously supporting a local business. We also hope to introduce the world of AACA to people who might not have otherwise heard of us.

The antique mall is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from the library, so you could easily fit it into your next visit. For information on location and business hours, click here to refer to their website.

We are also interested in adding items to our booth. If you have any vintage automotive knickknacks, toys, etc. that you would like to contribute please give us a call. We would love to hear from you!

What Cars Can You Expect to See at The Elegance at Hershey?

Modeled after the grandest concours hosted in Europe and America, The Elegance at Hershey is the ultimate garden party featuring the world's most exquisite collector cars, displayed in and around the impeccably manicured European style gardens of the Hotel Hershey. The Elegance at Hershey concours takes place on Sunday, June 11 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Here's a sneak peek at some of the 75 outstanding automobiles you will be able to see at this year's event:

Betty Davis' 1940 Buick Model 59 Super Estate Wagon: Originally owned by Warner Brothers & used in the movie Now, Voyager - WB gave the car to Davis; only 495 Super wagons were produced in 1940; wood for the body was supplied by Biehl Body from Reading, PA; the cost when new was $1,252; they were called "Estate Wagons" because it sounded classier than "station wagon."

Jayne Mansfield's 1960 Bentley Continental Convertible by Park Ward: This car was originally sold to a Los Angeles, CA, attorney who had it delivered to a home he had in France; after being imported into the U.S., it was eventually sold to Mansfield; the car features a large trunk rack that was well suited to Mansfield; the engine is 6230cc V-8 with dual SU carburetors.

Clark Gable's 1934 Packard 1106 Runabout Speedster by Lebaron: Twelve cylinder engine with polished aluminum heads; Gable was the original owner; one of 4 surviving 1106 LeBaron Runabout Speedsters; the car was once owned by Gene Zimmerman, owner of Automobilarama in Mechanicsburg, PA; the current owner acquired the car in the late 1970s.

1960 Plymouth XNR Spider by Ghia: An experimental concept car designed by Virgil Exner (note the XNR) and built in Italy by Ghia of Turin as many of Chrysler Idea cars were built. Its asymmetrical styling echoed Exners deep interest in motor racing. This car was once owned by the Shaw of Iran and was featured recently on Jay Leno's Garage show.

1938 Talbot-Darracq T-150-C: Body by the exclusive coachbuilder Figoni & Falaschi; the Darracq name was used on Talbot's export vehicles; only enclosed-fender Talbot Lago ever built.

1950 Ferrari 166 Inter Coupe by Touring: The earliest Ferrari street cars financed Enzo Ferrari's racing exploits in the early mid 1940s; the 166 Inter Coupe was the street version of the Ferrari race car; less than 40 Inter Coupes were sold between 1940-1951; a 110hp V-12 powers this vehicle.

1951 Ferrari 212 Export Spider by Fontana: This vehicle is #7 of only 25; only 212 bodied by Fontana; the 212 featured more displacement than the original V-12 offered, measuring 2,562cc.

1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta: One of only 350 Lusso's built (#290); the first owner was from Oakland, CA, where it stayed for 29 years; Lusso is the last model to receive the 250 series engine - the same that powered the Ferrari GTO to track fame.

1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS: Model named after Enzo Ferrari's son, Dino, who died in 1956; concept, or dream car, for this model was introduced in 1965 in Paris; first production model available in 1967; top speed - 148mph, 0-60 in 7 seconds; 1 of 1,246 Dino's produced.

1963 Porsche 901 (The 911 prototype): By the early 1960s, Porsche was looking to replace its model 356; 911 would be the new model, but there were 10 pre-production cars made, including this one; this is the only remaining 901; handmade fuel tank, door sills and seat rails; Porsche went on to use model "911" because Peugeot claimed ownership of any 3-digit model with a "0" in it; powered by a 122-hp, 6-cylinder Boxer engine; maximum speed of 130 mph, 0-60 in under 9 seconds, ¼ mile time of 16.4 seconds - this was "supercar" performance in the early 1960s.

1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6: Gull winged successor to 904: Raced as Team Holland in 16 events in 1966; started from the pole, lead every lap in Sundown Grand Prix at Mosport finishing 13 laps ahead of second-place car.

Buyer/Seller Beware Reminders for AACA Online Forums

Thanks to one of our forum administrators, Peter, for these reminders:
  • "TALK" with the potential buyer or seller.
  • Inspect the vehicle before money changes hands (yourself or a trusted 3rd party).
  • If the buyer/seller doesn't honestly discuss the car (condition, history, etc.), it's a scam.
  • Insist the buyer/seller calls you from a line not blocked. If they refuse, it's a scam.
  • If he provides a number, but it's a fax machine or the buyer never answers - it's a scam.
  • If the seller wants you to pay for anything BEFORE funds are secured, it's a scam. (shipping charges, etc.)
  • If payment issues are more complicated than a check, money order, certified check, wire transfer or cash, it's a scam.
  • ALWAYS wait for funds to be confirmed as valid by the bank (not just a deposit slip) before allowing the car or title to leave your possession - NEVER assume the funds are good, even a money order or certified check.
  • Cash TALKS!
  • DON'T engage with an obvious scammer - simply delete the emails.
  • Law enforcement can't do anything until a crime has been committed - don't let it get to that point.
  • And finally - if it seems too good to be true, it is.

No, it's not the Smith Automobile Company's Veracity, Smith or Great

Smith, which were made between 1902 and 1912 in nearby Topeka. Nor the Stafford, which was built from 1908 to 1915. It's the Ford F-series pickup truck, which has been produced in Kansas City, Missouri, since 1957. Ford's assembly association with the area dates back to 1913, while GM established its KC manufacturing presence (Kansas) during the 1920s.

The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is the country's premier resource for the collectible vehicle community. Since its formation in 1935, the Club, through its national office, publications, and membership, aids individuals, museums, libraries, historians and collectors dedicated to the enjoyment and preservation of automotive history.
