San Diego CITD Update

The San Diego CITD hosted a meeting with a delegation of senior officials and professionals from various countries in Africa, which are members of the African Free Trade Zone trading blocs. The delegation which included representatives from Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe were interested in learning about the San Diego region's border economy, trade environment, and economic development. The meeting was arranged through the San Diego Diplomacy Council, which organizes professional, educational, and cultural exchanges for incoming delegations for the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.

The
CTE Regional Pathways Program, in collaboration with the
California Community Colleges San Diego and Imperial Counties Regional Consortium, hosted a conference for K-12 and community college counselors and administrators at the Marina Village Conference Center on December 5th. The aim of the annual conference is to provide counselors and administrators with information about local career and technical education (CTE) pathways in high growth industry sectors within the San Diego & Imperial Counties region.
Following the conference's keynote panel, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a series of breakout sessions covering a variety of topics around CTE pathways and helping students develop the 21st century skills that are crucial in today's economy. One of those sessions, which was hosted by
Deputy Sector Navigator for Global and Logistics (DSNGTL) and San Diego Center for International Trade Development (CITD) Director, Victor Castillo, along with SB1070 Industry Connections Coordinator for Global Trade & Logistics and CITD International Trade Specialist, Monica Rosas, focused on Careers in International Trade, Supply Chain and Logistics.

SDSU's Center for International Business Education and Research Releases USA Trade Guide
San Diego State University's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) recently released the new USA Trade Guide. The purpose of the free guide is to assist U.S. exporters to succeed in global markets by providing answers to frequently asked questions about exporting, as well as key contacts, websites, and other important trade resources to help them connect with service providers nationwide.

Export University Seminar Series Starting in February
The
San Diego CITD will be hosting a series of monthly export-focused workshops beginning
February 14th called
Export University. Workshops in the series are designed to help U.S. companies optimize their export potential and increase their international sales.
The first session in the series,
"Market Entry and Tax Strategies: Planning At Home and Abroad", will be presented by Jo-Renee Hunter, a Los Angeles based CPA and Attorney with extensive experience with international tax transactions. This workshop will cover topics including:
- Tax Impact of Export Transactions
- Impact of Entity Selection on U.S. and Foreign Tax Exposure
- Foreign Sales and Value Added Taxes (VAT)
- How to Eliminate Double Tax on Foreign Income

Registration for APICS CPIM Certification Preparation Course Now Open
The
San Diego CITD and DSN for Global Trade & Logistics (DSNGTL), in collaboration with the
San Diego Chapter of APICS, is now offering the updated
APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification courses at Southwestern College's Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa. APICS is a national industry-recognized association for supply management professionals.
Cost:
APICS Plus Members: $1,315
APICS Core Members/Non-members: $1,465
Deadline to register is February 16th. Registrations after this date will incur a $50 late registration fee.
