Calling Student Actors to perform

Since September, SDFAS and the  German Pacific School have entered the contest collaboratively, and are making a 5 to  8 minute-movie on the theme "Peace in War" to be submitted in the Spring.
This initiative is meant to promote peace among young generations, in light of the terrible events of WW1, for which we celebrate the 100th year anniversary.

This is a fun and unique opportunity for your child and your family to contribute to a complex and inspiring initiative, which involves not only individuals but also two school communities!

If you are willing to perform, please click on the link to get more details, and contact Benedicte Brouder at
before January 19, please.

We need your help and support, and would be extremely grateful for your participation!

Thank you

Winter Performances Pre-Elementary and Elementary
Maternelle : Sur un air de musique Africaine

Pictured: Zebra: PK1, Giraffes, Elephants, Crocodiles: PK2 and African Sorcerers: K.

We discovered so many wonders during our trip to the African Savannah. We roared with some very cute lions, and danced with elephants and zebras. We celebrated the sun, and paddled down a river. We all celebrated the lion, king of the animals. So hakuna matata everyone!
SDFAS Winter Show MATERNELLE 2017-18: Part 1 - Part 2

Elémentaire : De Paris à San Diego...

SDFAS Winter Show ELEMENTAIRE 2017-18: Part 1/4
SDFAS Winter Show ELEMENTAIRE 2017-18: Part 1/4

All the elementary classes, French and American teachers, worked together to create the elementary winter show. The original idea discussed since October was to create an event around the school's core values (respect, freedom, friendship, tolerance, integration, equality...) and to express them when singing. The different classes chose two songs one in English and the other in French with their teachers and then worked vocals and choral techniques with Claire Selva (1st grade teacher). Julien Moncelet (5th grade teacher) wrote the story to link all the songs ("a French family who decides to leave Paris to go to San Diego to join our school - San Diego French-American School") and asked his 5th graders students to act out on stage when on stage this family's story.
The result of this team work and collaborative effort was definitively a great success!
Pre-Elementary: Exploring another French Tradition:
La Galette des Rois

Pictured: Mattin, Sophie and Stella.

With the arrival of January comes another French celebration with the galette des rois - the "king cake." It's a flaky, sweet cake served warm, straight out of the oven. But the pleasure brought by a galette des rois isn't merely due to its delicious taste - it's also the anticipation of wondering whether you will be the lucky one to discover  la fève , a tiny charm, buried inside one of the slices. If you are, you're "king for a day" and take your place in a 700-year old French tradition! Each class had a galette des rois, and we had a lot of royalty this week at SDFAS. In Sophie's class, the king was Mattin, and he picked his queen, Stella.

During this week in which we celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. day on Monday, it is important to recognize the importance of talking with our children, in age appropriate ways, about freedom, equal rights, kindness, patience with others, community service and standing up for what is right.  As we are all aware, the SDFAS mission strongly embraces multiculturalism and diversity and with it recognition and respect for all individuals. The curriculum and culture in our school seek to model and reinforce these values for our students and are part of what make SDFAS such a special place.

2018 is off to a busy start at SDFAS. Upcoming community events include the State of the School address on Friday, January 26 during the morning from 8:30 - 9:30 am with coffee and croissants in the auditorium to celebrate together the school's achievements as well as reflect upon opportunities and challenges for the future. Otherwise, the Jog-a-thon will take place in the morning on February 2 and the Talent Show in the evening on February 9. On February 8, all elementary school parents are invited to come in the morning for a presentation about the SDFAS Middle School Experience - La vie du collège à SDFAS.

I hope to see you all soon on campus!

Mark Rosenblum, Head of school

Chers parents,

Elementary: Cross Disciplinary Teaching in 1st Grade

At SDFAS, students are exposed to a diversity of learning situations. Teachers use cross-disciplinary methods in order to help students build meaningful knowledge. For instance, part of the science program in 1 st  grade is dedicated to practicing the scientific approach (questioning, observing, experimenting, describing...). During the same activity, students reinvest the vocabulary they have learned and incorporate their knowledge on size and measurement, which is a part of the mathematics program.
Pre-Elementary: PK2 students in a P.E/Math active learning activity

Pictured: Mylène and Zoe - Penelope and Viggo

This week our PK2 students discovered a classic game "le beret" or "steal the
bacon". Each player has a number written in his/her hands. The « bacon » is placed in the center of the playing area. A teacher calls out a number and all students with that number run to pick up the « bacon ».
The game is a lot of fun and a great way to demonstrate the advantages of kinesthetic learning. In kinesthetic learning, movements and actions replace more passive forms of learning, such as simply listening to the teacher explaining a concept. Our young students work on numeration, are active participants in their learning and even more important in PK, they enjoy learning!
Elementary: Science STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Experiment

Science Exploration: The 3A students really put on their thinking caps these past few days! Enjoy these photos of our students designing, building, and testing their bridges.
The record so far is 175 pennies!
Middle School: JMUN welcomes SDDC delegates

This past Friday January 12, 2018, students from the JMUN club had the opportunity to welcome 20 delegates from the San Diego Diplomacy Council on campus. This was a unique chance to discuss with international citizens about topics related to issues they are exploring within the scope of the JMUN club experience.
Thank you to Ms. Aseltine and the students, for their carefully crafted and deep questions! Thank you to Ms. Addo and Mr. Baron for their presence and help, and thank you to our visitors, whom we were delighted to welcome at SDFAS!
