Safety and Security
Messenger from Dr. Spurka - March 2, 2018
Dear Parents and Cambridge Families,

School safety and security continues to be an important focus here at Cambridge. I have engaged our students, staff, and parents in conversations on the things we are doing well and areas we need to improve. My message to the PTSA this morning was about my perspective on school safety and providing a safe learning environment where students can learn, and teachers can teach. My message was that I did not believe that we should run our school like a prison, but more like a bank. We invest our financial resources in banks, and we expect our bank to protect our investments. Like the bank, we have an obligation to protect your most important assets, your children. This is not something we take lightly. We will continue to look at things we do well and areas we need to address. We need your assistance in enforcing some of our safety procedures:
  • Please continue to enter the school through the front entrance. Expect our office staff to ask for your ID as well as your nature of business prior to being buzzed in. When you enter the building, please go straight into the main office.
  • The exterior doors on the sides of the school will remain locked throughout the school-day. Starting Monday morning, students being dropped off in the side car-pool lane, can still be dropped off on that side but will have to enter through the school's front entrance.
  • We provide student supervision in the morning beginning at 7:30 am. We have noticed a number of students sitting in our hallways as early as 6:00 am. Moving forward, unless the student is involved in an extracurricular activity that is supervised by school staff, students should not be on campus until after 7:30 am.
  • When you arrive for a teacher conference, you will check in the front office. The teacher will meet you in the front office and take you to the meeting.
  • Encourage your students to read their Fulton County email daily, as I will continue to send them messages regarding safety and security.
  • Continue to talk with your child about his or her use of social media. If something is inappropriate or offensive, please report it. Simply, if you see something, say something. The links below provide opportunities for anyone to report suspicious behavior.

     https://asp.schoolmessenger.com/fultonschools/quicktip/ or e-mail: [email protected]
As you read in our Superintendent's communication yesterday, we will send more information regarding a school-wide structured time of demonstration on March 14. Given this is a GROWL Day, there will be minimal disruption to the school and instructional time.

We continue to evaluate our procedures and will continue to engage with our students. We want to know the security measures that make them feel safe and the measures that make them feel unsafe so that we can make the appropriate adjustment. I would encourage our parents to attend the district forum on safety which is Thursday, March 8, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, at Centennial High School.

Thank you for all your support!

Digital Learning Day
March 9, 2018
Due to us missing several days to inclement weather, our school district has decided to utilize Friday, March 9, 2018 as a Digital Learning day.  While this day will serve as a make-up day for one of the inclement weather days, it will also serve as a pilot as to how we can better leverage our technology should we have future school closings.  In the next two weeks, your child's teacher will be sharing the plan on work which will be expected to be completed over the weekend.

From the Digital Learning Day, we hope to gather feedback from our teachers on how they will utilize their technology to instruct and engage students in a meaningful learning experience should school be canceled for any reason. We realize that our Digital Learning Day is planned, and therefore students will have the opportunity to utilize our Professional Learning Day on Thursday, March 8, in addition to the rest of the weekend to complete their work. Assignments for the Digital Learning will be expected to be completed by Monday, March 12.

We will work with your child's teacher to communicate the assignment and how it will be available to your child.  The time commitment for the Digital Learning Day should be no more than 30 minutes per class.  Students can get help from teachers by emailing them during their virtual office hours on March 9.
  • World Language and Career Technical Agriculture Education: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
  • Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Physical Education: 9:00 am - 10:00 am
  • English and Social Studies: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
  • Science and Math: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
All questions regarding the Digital Learning Day should be directed to your child's teacher.

Tech Tips for Students
Fulton County student email
It is critical for all students to check their Fulton County email every day. Daily announcements, called Cambridge Headlines, are pushed to students through their email account that provides information on activities, resources, and deadlines. Also, the Cambridge Administration sends important information to all students; including information on security and safety.

To access Student Fulton County email from any device:
1. Open a web browser and go to  portal.office.com
2. Log into Office 365 using:
                              Username: [email protected]
Password: birthdate (mmddyyyy) or their unique password

3. Once logged into Office 365, select the Mail app to view important email from Cambridge Headlines, teachers and staff.
4. The first time you access Office 365 Mail, you will need to select your time zone and save it.

Students should come to the Student Center to see Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Macleod, or the Help Desk if you are having problems with your Surface or you cannot access your email account.

End of Course (EOC) Test-Out Option
Application window: March 14 - 16, 2018
For the 2017-2018 school year, the Georgia Department of Education is allowing students the option to "test out" of any course that has an associated EOC. (EOC courses include 9th Grade Literature, American Literature, Biology, Physical Science, Coordinate Algebra, Analytic Geometry, US History, and Economics). The window for the 2017-2018 school year for eligible students to test out is March 14-16, 2018.

Testing out will allow high aptitude students an opportunity to be awarded course credit without taking the class if they score at the "exceeds" level on the assessment. While this is an opportunity for students to move past some high school courses without taking them, careful thought and consideration should be used to weigh the possibility of student success on both the test and future coursework/endeavors.  Students/parents must pay a $50 state test fee per test to Cambridge no later than March 7, 2018, prior to attempting an EOC for test out purposes. The state test fee will be refunded if the student scores at the "distinguished learner" level.  A student who is currently enrolled in the course or has previously been enrolled in the course is not eligible to test out.

Partnership Against Domestic Violence Teen Summit
Dialogue and Action
Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PADV) is proud to announce our 9th annual Teen Summit! As youth begin dating, it's important they are equipped with the necessary tools to help them engage in healthy interaction. Teen Summit offers parents and teens an improved understanding of the ingredients that make up respectful relationships, as well as how to recognize the warning signs and patterns of dating violence.

The 2018 Teen Summit will empower teens and adults to deepen the dialogue on teen dating violence, and prompt next steps that will help drive "Dialogue and Action".  Through hands-on activities, workshops, and teen-led sessions, this event will equip both teens and adults with the tools necessary to not only engage in hard conversations but grow in an understanding of each other's perspectives and concerns and generate plans of action attendees can take back to their own communities.
