Port O'Connor Toy Run
Thanks to donations from the Club's Charitable Program and the generosity of our members, since 2013, the club has collected and donated over $10,000 in new toys and bicycles for the Port O'Connor Toy Run!
It's that time of year again!
Become one of Santa's elves and help

PURCHASE AND DONATE
Donate new unwrapped toys for children ages 2 - 16.
Your donated toys can be delivered by December 1st to the following locations:
* Club office in Galveston (305 21st Street, Suite 241)
* Elite Diesel Services in Kemah (2103 Anders Lane)
* POC Rod and Gun in Port O'Connor (82 A North Byers Road)
* Waterloo Rod Company in Victoria (2310 N Navarro, Suite B)

MAKE A DONATION
If shopping for toys isn't an option, you can write a check and WE WILL PURCHASE THE TOYS FOR YOU! Please make checks payable to the Houston Big Game Fishing Club. Please note POC Toy Run in the subject line and mail to 305 21st Street, Suite 241, Galveston, Texas 77550. Once the toys have been purchased on your behalf, we will mail you the original receipt for your records.

Fun Fishing Day
Sponsors, donors, volunteers and KIDS turned out in full force for the 5th annual Fun Fishing Day! The Club raised a record amount of donations for the special event and we hosted a record amount of children from the Ronald McDonald House and Shriners Children's Hospital!

 Captain's Corner

Although many of you have switched over to hunting mode, we've had a good number of Ling reports coming from Galveston, Freeport and Port Aransas from boats that are getting out. Most have been caught at the ship channel buoys with a few of them boated well inside of the Galveston jetties. So, if you're not headed to the ranch, Ling fishing might be a great alternative.

 The Learning Curve

There are only three knots that preserve 100% of the strength of the line they are tied in: the Australian plait (or braid), the Bimini twist, and the Benjamin (or 100%) knot. All depend on multiple twists/braids to stretch out, creating a spring-like connection that eliminates any one "pinch point" that weakens the line. When creating a double line to connect to my wind-on leader, I'm a Bimini guy, but most of my friends seem to be Australian braid guys. Since both are 100%, the best one is the one you tie the most and are the most comfortable with.
The Benjamin knot is the only one that doesn't create a double line, making it more useful to tie directly to a swivel when you are not connecting to a wind-on leader. I've heard people say that with overtesting line we have now, 100% connections aren't really needed, and maybe they aren't most of the time, but after all the work and money spent trying to get the bite, it sure makes the relatively short time we have a blue marlin on more fun if you're not worried about tackle failure. Hopefully we'll get one or two more chances this fall to get out there and stretch out some string before it gets cold and the deer hunting gets too good to find fishermen to go.....
