NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

January 17, 2018, The New Haven Independent, by David Sepulveda- "In "Aftermath," a new exhibition at Fred Giampietro Gallery, a painter's passion is on full display in the conflict images of New Haven artist John Keefer, whose work is being shown with the sculptural creations of artist Kurt Steger - found object-construction hybrids that bear compelling messages in content and in their physical composition. The show runs through Feb. 3. An artists' reception was held on Jan. 6 at the Chapel Street gallery, drawing a sizable crowd despite the prevailing chill and challenging conditions left in the wake of the bomb cyclone several days earlier. Columns of thick, black smoke rise like fear-inducing specters over a low-slung middle east landscape in "Airstrike," the smallest of John Keefer's paintings. The work hangs in the gallery window and signals not only a theme of his series, but suggests some discordance as one views the beauty of magnificently rendered paintings at the service of haunting imagery and content..." MARK ST. MARY AND JOAN JACOBSON-ZAMORE @KEHLER LIDDELL GALLERY

Kehler Liddell Gallery presents two new concurrent solo shows: Mark St. Mary, No Longer Noticed Joan Jacobson-Zamore, Once Upon a Dream in Lapland January 11 - February 11.

About the show:
Lost Dog. CD Release Party. Tag Sale. Posted to streetlight poles and utility boxes, notices like these create a collage of various colors, images, and typefaces. Mark St. Mary has spent the past year photographically studying the results of their eventual removal, where the residual adhesives look like a community game of visual Mad LibsĀ®. No Longer Noticed, is an exhibition of the resulting rectilinear patterns, dystopian landscapes, and anthropomorphic forms.

While St. Mary's work unearths a kind of collective subconscious, Joan Jacobson-Zamore presents a series of dreamlike landscapes and scenes in Once Upon a Dream in Lapland. The artist states the concept for the show developed after a trip to Finland, and says the pieces ask us "to suspend our sense of reality for just a moment." Zamore sees her work as a "rekindling of the natural energy around [her] and a waking of the playful or mysterious magic within."

FREE SELF MASSAGE WORKSHOP FOR MOMS TO BE @WESTVILLE MASSAGE

"My dream, for moms-to-be, is for you to be as relaxed at home as you are on my table. So, I'm leading a free self-care workshop. I'll teach you self-massage techniques and mom-related stretches to help you feel sooo much more comfortable. You'll learn how you can massage away your prenatal backaches, stiff necks, leg cramps, headaches, and swelling. Besides feeling sooo good, massage is wonderful for reducing stress on weight-bearing joints, encouraging blood and lymph circulation and helping to relax nervous tension. Hurray for massage! I'll also introduce you to the latest version of my Lotusleaf pregnancy sleep system. I'll even bring a prototype for you to try out. I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding its construction, use, and appearance. We'll have tea and healthy snacks and, of course, chocolate will be involved. Dress in comfortable clothes. Space is limited to the first 10 participants."  REGISTER HERE
