March 2018

It's basketball time in the Bluegrass! With March Madness right around the corner and weeks of rain (hopefully) behind us, we are optimistically looking forward to the sunshine and activities in store for us this spring.

After meeting with members of Kentucky's General Assembly at last month's Legislative Breakfast, AIA Kentucky leaders are now ready to take advocacy to the next level. Several state and local chapter leaders will head to San Diego next week for AIA's annual Grassroots Leadership Conference, where they will learn skills for representing Kentucky's architects both in their chapters and in their communities.

While that is taking place, there is plenty for you to jump into right here at home. Read on for more information about our upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities, as well as upcoming competitions, scholarships and grants - so much to take advantage of!

Legislative Action Updates

The American Institute of Architects and AIA Kentucky have been working tirelessly, at both the State and Federal level, to protect the practice of architecture and promote the interests of the profession. In early February, AIA Kentucky signed onto a letter of support for extending the 179-D tax credit. The letter was sent to Sen. Mitch McConnell in the final hours before passage of the budget bill and we were thrilled to find that the credit was indeed extended for another year!

Closer to home, we have been monitoring legislation that pertains to the oversight of state boards and commissions by the Public Protection Cabinet and efforts to allow the General Assembly to set limits on liability. In addition, we have been actively working to oppose HB227, which would negatively impact incentives for solar power in our state. For more information on our chapter's efforts to advocate for your profession, check out our Legislative Updates archive.

Final Renewal Reminder

Don't let this newsletter be your last!   March 31, 2018 is the final renewal deadline, to avoid any lapse in your AIA membership benefits. We want to continue serving you, so please contact Kelly Ives, AIA if you need an additional copy of your renewal invoice or request a Dues Installment Plan if you are not currently able to make your payment in full.

Firm Leaders:
A reminder to have one principal from your company complete the supplemental dues section of the invoice. This additional dues payment is required by AIA Kentucky bylaws, in order to support our advocacy efforts on behalf of the profession and this payment also ensures your Firm Profile listing in our annual directory publication. Questions? Contact Kelly Ives, AIA

The Last Word

I'm still coming down off my Olympics high after watching all those fantastic athletes compete in South Korea.  Whether spinning upside down in the air and landing on a snowy slope, or careening down a tube of ice head first, it takes enormous concentration and fearlessness.  Even the curling takes precision and focus!  What an inspiring couple of weeks showcasing the pursuit of excellence.

Do you have the concentration, fearlessness, precision and focus to take YOUR game to the next level?  Our goal this year is to provide you with resources and training that help you advance your professional expertise.  If your goal is to improve your capability and effectiveness as a project manager, I hope you'll consider attending our 2-day PSMJ Project Management Bootcamp  coming up March 28-29 in Louisville.  We have a few remaining seats available for this high-level instructional program designed specifically for architecture/engineer/construction project managers.  Yes, it's priced higher than our regular CE programming, but we think this program's proven value will be a worthy investment.  We are happy to have the opportunity to bring this course to Kentucky (for the first time ever!) and offer it to you at a discounted rate.  Check it out at www.aiaky.org/pmbootcamp and register by March 14th.

Wishing you many more days of sunshine,

Janet D. Pike, Hon. AIA
