News From Around UC
Students worked from sun up to sun down to spread the word about the campaign and send personal thank-yous to donors.
Alum and Athletic Director, Bren Stevens, rallied coaches, athletes, and the community to #GiveForGold.

We #GaveForGold!

It was a team effort - in every sense of the word. Our first 24 hour crowd funding effort, #GiveForGold , resulted in an amazing 594 donors raising $62,135 towards the Welch Challenge Campaign - thanks to our friends, alumni, faculty/staff, students, and a generous matching offer by Drs. Ed and Janet Welch.

The team with the most donors was our softball team, with 110 donors. Baseball came in second with 92, and lacrosse was third with 83. The baseball team had the most donations, raising $6,475. Softball raised $3,101, and Men's soccer raised $3,008.

Thank you to everyone who #GaveForGold!

President Welch Featured

As President Welch nears his retirement date after nearly thirty years of service to the University of Charleston, he shared a few thoughts with 13 News, saying, " When you come to commencement day and you realize you've had a role in shaping the institution and shaping the processes for those students - it's extraordinarily rewarding." For those interested in his retirement plans, Dr. Welch told The State Journal, "My own vision for my post-retirement activity is to find the best ways to work with nonprofits, businesses and government entities to foster innovation throughout the Kanawha Valley and beyond. Innovation is not a luxury. It is the bedrock for change, growth, and life."

ADN Program Will be Offered in Charleston

Starting this fall, more students will be able to pursue their dreams of becoming a nurse as UC will offer a hybrid weekend Associate Degree in Nursing program on the Charleston campus.

Similar to the program at our Beckley location, the Charleston program is designed for non-traditional students who want to complete their degrees without interrupting their busy schedules. It will be offered on alternate weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and online throughout the week. The program can be completed in 16 months of full time study. Student cohorts are accepted every semester (3 cohorts a year), with 20 students in each cohort. The new program will start in August, 2018, and those interested can begin applying now.

The ADN will continue to be offered in Beckley as well.

Most Recent Hire to Pittsburgh Steelers Coaching Staff is UC Alum

Blaine Stewart, a 2017 graduate of the UC MBA program, was recently named the new offensive assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Stewart played football through his undergraduate career at James Madison University and continued his athletic career as a wide receiver for the Golden Eagle football team. Many may know Blaine as son of the former West Virginia University head football coach, Bill Stewart, but Blaine is proving to make a name for himself on his own. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin commented that Blaine "is an impressive young man" who has "matured beyond his years."

We think so, too! Congrats, Blaine!

From UC to CEO

Meet Angie Settle, a 1993 graduate from the UC Nursing program. Angie is a southern West Virginia native and currently serves as the CEO and director of West Virginia Health Right, a Charleston-based clinic that provides free medical care for the working poor. After graduating magna cum laude from UC, Settle went on to eventually earn her doctorate in nursing. She discovered Health Right during a clinical rotation; this rotation introduced her to future, and she began working at the clinic in 1997. Now the CEO, Angie says Health Right is "like no place else [I've] ever seen." Settle shared more of her incredible story in the Gazette this past month.

Way to go, Angie!

Jordan Paul Enters the German Football League

2016 grad, Jordan Paul, is the newest quarterback for the Allgau Comets, a professional team in the German Football League. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Paul played both quarterback and wide receiver for UC. Jordan is no stranger to European sports; shortly after graduating, he moved to Italy to play for the Torino Giaguari. Head coach of the Comets, Stan Bedwell, had this to say about his newest recruit:  "The quarterback position is perhaps the most important role in any offense, but in our system it's even bigger... Jordan is an experienced quarterback that has played at a high level. He has a big body, throws well, and is able to make plays with his feet if the pocket breaks down."

Congrats, Jordan!
