The Tiger's Roar!
Tildenville Elementary School, Winter Garden, FL
Monday, February 5, 2018

Principal Alvarez
Once a year, we ask our parents and guardians to invest a few minutes and take an anonymous school climate survey. This survey is not very long at all but is extremely helpful to us with our ongoing school improvement efforts. If you have a student attending Tildenville, would you please click on the link below and complete at your earliest convenience? Thank you very much for your help.

I hope this finds your February off to a terrific start and thank you so much for looking over our progress. Have a nice weekend!

PTA Update
2018 PTA Legislative Report for the Tildenville community

Did you know PTA is the oldest and largest child advocacy organization in the world? Long before telephones, computers or even women's right to vote, two moms gathered 2,000 parents in Washington, DC, to protest the deaths and injuries of children from the machines of the industrial revolution. We are still speaking out for the education and well-being of children, 120 years later!

On Tuesday, January 23rd 111 students, teachers and parents from twenty Orange County schools took the PTA bus to Tallahassee to advocate for public schools, representing YOU, our PTA membership.

Your PTA membership alone adds power to the ten PTA volunteers who influence policy every day of session at the Florida Capitol.

Follow what's affecting our children:

Next month: watch for updates regarding the 2018 election and the 2018 Constitutional Revision Committee.

All of this affects YOU. Please send me your questions or concerns - and Thank You for your interest!

Dual Language
Updates by grade level for our parents

Pre-Kindergarten

Students recently received a garden bed of their own in their playground (above)! Students got right to work planting flowers that will attract butterflies. Thank you to our parents who made this happen and for Mrs. Vela for taking on this new project with her students.

Kindergarten Dual Language
In Science we are working with: Day and Night (el cielo de dia y de noche).
Vocabulary : El sol, El cielo, la luna, la noche, las nubes y las estrellas.
New topic: Big Idea 14: Organization and Development of Living things
Vocabulary: The senses including eyes (ojos), nose (nariz), taste (saborear), fingers (dedos), sight (vista), smell (oler), ears (oidos) touch(tacto)

In Reading we are working with Silabas Va, ve, vi, vo , vu; Personajes (characters); Sequence (secuencia); and Setting( lugar, escenario). We are also learning new vocabulary!

2nd Grade Dual Language
In second grade the unit is continuing. The expectation is for students to be able to:
talk about pets and other animals, describe animal characteristics such as size, color and body parts by comparing and contrasting, say what animals eat, and how animals and people move (run, swim, walk, fly, and etc.)

3rd Grade Dual Language
Working on unit 2 ?Cómo  Vivimos? DESCUBRE ARGENTINA, Las Personas en Comunidad, La ropa y la moda, Lugares de la Comunidad!

4th Grade Dual Language
Students will talk about pets by describing what they look like and what they eat; discuss farm animals and their care by imagining that they visit a farm in Costa Rica; recognize the role animals play in literature by reading a fable; and describe some zoo animals by imagining that they visit a zoo in Costa Rica.

5th Grade Dual Language
In Spanish, we are working on our grammar skills by practicing using present and past tense verbs in a sentence. We will soon be working on using identifying and using adverbs.

Gifted Classes
Science experiments

STEM - Rocket Experiment
Third through 5th grade gifted classes are blasting off with designs and builds of water bottle rockets with parachutes! This is a STEM completion activity from the ESO (Elementary Science Olympiad). Data sheets will have each teams' maximum "hang time" and will be compared to determine which teams performed the best.

Above and then just below:
Third through fifth grade gifted classes are seen here blasting off with designs and builds of water bottle rockets with parachutes!

STEM - Mystery Powders
We will also be doing several other STEM ESO activities including "mystery powders." In this event they will be given 6 known powders (flour, sugar, salt, corn starch, white sand and baking soda). They first run and record characteristics analysis of each of the known powders. The competition is to identify those powders in containers labeled only A-F. Finally, they must identify mixed powders.

STEM -Solar Energy
Another science event addresses solar energy. Students will make their own photometers (light reading devices made from wax with a sheet of aluminum foil sandwiched in) in a competition of design to find the best reflectors between two controlled light sources.

STEM - Understanding the "Scientific Method"
We've also been learning the Scientific Method for experiments with all gifted classes. First we ran a test of bubble gum. They created their own hypothesis on what would happen to the weight of the bubble gum after chewing for 2 minutes. The measured the bubble gum before and after chewing. They then compared the results with their hypothesis. The next test was, of course, a change in the variable: sugar free gum. A fun, but productive series of experiments!

Saturday School

We are on a roll in Saturday School! Students have been building houses, making sand, writing comic books and so much more. Every week that Saturday School students attend, their name goes in a drawing to win a bike at the end of the 8 weeks. Saturday School starts at 9:00AM!

Saturday School students were putting their math skills to the test by building a house using perimeter and area.

Testing

WIDA testing for LY students will continue through  the month of February. Students taking this assessment recieved a parent letter several weeks ago. FSA testing is not to far off ! A parent letter will come home in the next few weeks with information regarding those assessments.

Computer Program Help Sheet

We have reached the mid point in the school year and our Tigers are working hard! We are reposting the computer programs available to our Tildenville students. If you have any trouble accessing any of the programs please contact your child's teacher for help. Thank you for your support with our Tigers!
