Thoughts From Interim Pastor Linda Hanus

It's that time again- time for our annual congregational meeting. I realize that many of us don't like to attend meetings. However, annual meetings are very important in the life of congregations. This is the one time each year that we are called to gather together to conduct the business of this church, according to our SOH Constitution, Chapter 10 Bylaw C 10.01. Here it states: "The annual meeting of this congregation shall be called by the Congregation Council to be held on or between January 1 and March 31 of each year to
  1. a.       Review and accept the unaudited financial report of the Treasurer for the            preceding year
  2. b.       Approve the budget and goals for the coming year
  3. c.       Elect persons to the Congregation Council and appoint other positions                within the congregation
  4. d.      Acknowledge and accept the annual reports of the preceding year
  5. e.      Accomplish other business of this congregation that has been properly               noticed to the congregation and included on the annual meeting agenda
According to the Constitution, 10% of voting members of this congregation shall constitute a quorum at all meetings of this congregation. A quorum is necessary to vote/take action on agenda items. You may ask, "Who is considered a 'voting member'? Great question. Since our Constitution lists three categories of members (voting, associate and seasonal), the definitions of each and all would cover a lot of space here. So, if you are wondering what kind of member you are and what that means, please ask or check a copy of the Constitution. All members are welcome to attend the annual meeting.

So, as you can see, the annual meeting in a congregation is a very important one.  During this interim period, as SOH prepares for the calling of your next pastor, it is especially important that members attend and participate in the life of this congregation- in worship, learning, stewardship of time, talents and monetary treasure, service, outreach, fellowship, and yes, meetings. Also, everyone needs to stay informed about what I like to call "the state of the congregation". The Congregation Council is striving to maintain transparency regarding SOH's mission, ministry and money.

Please consider serving as a voting member to the 2018 Grand Canyon Synod Assembly. It will take place from June 14-16 in Tucson. This should be an exciting one, because we will be electing our next bishop. So, at our meeting on January 21, SOH needs to elect and send two males and one female. Rusty and I will also be there. Please prayerfully consider putting your name up for nomination.

Mark your calendar and plan to attend the annual meeting on Sunday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m. (There will not be a 10:30 service that morning.) Come and learn how you can make a difference in this new year. Your help is needed and appreciated. Where is your niche? We have a place for you.

Just a friendly reminder- please call me directly when you are in need of pastoral care or need to update me on a situation, hospitalization, death, etc. Please don't leave a message on the church answering machine. As your interim pastor, I should be your first call, and together, we can make plans and decisions. My cell # is: (602) 681-7476. Please keep this handy. Thank you.

Yours in Christ's Service,
Pastor Linda

Seniors Rock - Justa Center
Greetings one and all!  Just wanted to touch base with you and let you know that the Justa Center picked up all the wonderful items you so generously gave. A million thanks to all of you for what you did, that will make so many of our retired soldiers very happy. Here are a couple photos for you, of all the donations ready for pick up, packed in the truck on their way to the Justa Center and the amazing Seniors Rock group who coordinated this wonderful Winter Project.

Also, I would like to know how you are adjusting without Pastor Glen? During this time of transition, please be sure to share your thoughts about our Church Community, by talking to a Church Council Member, one of the Call Team Members, or by writing on the back of a Connection Card your thoughts - good, bad or indifferent - just be straightforward, so when the Call Team begins the interview phase, they will know what you are wanting and needing in our next Pastor here at Spirit of Hope.

Lastly, I would like to thank you once again for allowing me to serve on your Church Council for the past six years. This will be my last letter as your Vice President, but always remember that Church Council Meetings are open to anyone, if you ever wish to attend. If you would like to talk at a Church Council Meeting, you can simply email the President, so it can be put on the meeting agenda.

I would like to leave you with some positive words...Sometimes all you need to do to pick up someone's spirit is to say a few kind words, or flash a smile. Letting people know that they have made a difference to you, even if it is nothing more than acknowledging someone for holding a door open, allows them to feel worthy. A hug goes even further. If you do your part to praise life, then you will find life and people praising you too! Be the power of positive change!

God Bless,
Wendy Sontag
