Board of Education Recognizes efforts of Female Engineering Students

Girl power was on full display at the December Board of Education meeting as Washington Township High School engineering teacher Simone Wong and the all-female students in Wong's Introduction to Engineering course outlined the complex processes that they used to craft bath fizzies as an in-class assignment.
The students showcased their problem-solving, critical-thinking, creativity and communication skills in presenting the step-by-step processes that they used in researching, brainstorming and creating formulas for the creation of bath fizzies.

Engineers Cultivate Functioning Human Muscle from Skin Cells

Biomedical engineers have grown the first functioning human skeletal muscle from induced pluripotent stem cells.
The advance builds on work published in 2015 when researchers at Duke University
grew the first functioning human muscle tissue from cells obtained from muscle biopsies
. The ability to start from cellular scratch using non-muscle tissue will allow scientists to grow far more muscle cells, provide an easier path to genome editing and cellular therapies as well as develop individually tailored models of rare muscle diseases for drug discovery and basic biology studies.

There's no single standard for which jobs count as STEM, and this may contribute to a number of misperceptions about who works in STEM and the difference that having a STEM-related degree can make in workers' pocketbooks.

Safety glass inspires cheaper and lighter batteries for electric cars

Researchers from the Materials Science and Technology Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee modified the design of lithium-ion batteries, adding slits along the electrodes. The technique is designed to mimic safety glass, which is bound together to ensure it fractures into small fragments in the event of an impact rather than creating larger, sharp pieces.
Lithium-ion batteries are "exceptionally safe", said the team, but they can short dangerously after an impact. Adding slits should allow batteries to fragment into smaller pieces rather than completely breaking, said researcher and author Nancy Dudney.

Engineers Secure Major Victory in Final Tax Reform Legislation

As a result of extensive advocacy by NSPE and the engineering and architecture community, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, now signed into law, allows for a 20% deduction for businesses organized as "pass-through" entities, like S-corporations, sole proprietorships, and limited liability partnerships, subject to income limitations. The Senate bill would have greatly restricted this deduction for "service" businesses, including engineers, architects, doctors, lawyers, and financial services firms.

2018 Professional Engineers Conference July 17-23, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Professional Engineers Conference attracts more than 400 professional engineers and industry leaders from across the United States and internationally for two full days of professional development and networking. The 2018 Professional Engineers Conference will include at least 25 one-hour sessions, presentations by national leaders, and commercial exhibits.
