Captain's Corner

We are still receiving some good Wahoo reports from the guys and gals that are able to get out between the short weather windows we've had lately. The crew on the Titan Up are already off to a good start this year with a few good Wahoo and a bonus Swordfish on the board. The Paparda Rey recently had a great trip as well catching 8 hoos with one over 72 pounds. The bite has been hit and miss but the fish that are being caught have definitely been averaging in the larger weight range this year.

The Learning Curve
Written by Captain Troy Day
Last month, the IGFA made 2 changes to their Angling Rules which apply to both our yearlong Club Awards and to the Lone Star Shootout. On touching the angler while fighting a fish, they added that "Holding or touching an angler in a manner that assists them in fighting the fish or takes pressure off the angler" would disqualify the catch, but that "Touching or briefly holding the angler to prevent them from falling does not constitute a disqualification."
The source of more debate/questions over the years is the backing rule. Before, using Spectra backing that tested over 130# would have been illegal. The main problem with that Spectra breaking strength varies batch to batch enough that even if you had some that typically broke under 130#, there is no guarantee. The rule now is that the "first 16.5 feet (5 meters) of line directly preceding the double line, leader or hook" defines the breaking strength, so as long as you don't use a topshot that overtests, you're within the rules.
Both positive rule changes, in my opinion. Hopefully we'll get a couple more shots at the wahoo, but regardless, see y'all at the banquet!
