The Skokie Home Scoop - March 2, 2018

Dear Skokie Families,

Several newsletters ago, I introduced an offering that Dave Kanne (Principal of Washburne) and I will be co-hosting for parents during the Spring months.  Coffee and Conversation is an opportunity for parents to join the middle school administrators in an informal conversation around a theme that challenges us as those raising adolescents.  Our first Coffee and Conversation had been scheduled for Friday, February 9; however, that ended up being a canceled school day due to the snow.  We would like to re-offer this event for Friday, March 16 at 9:30am in the Community Room at Skokie.  Please consider making the time to join us as this first session will center on the theme of cell phone use and abuse.  We know this is a topic many parents of middle schoolers have questions about and we look forward to having a guided discussion together.  There is no need to RSVP for this event, but we do hope you are able to join us.

Finally, this week concluded both second trimester and our second Inquiry Period.  6th graders who elected the Art/Music/Drama strand will see a shift in their exploratory schedules beginning on Monday to reflect the third trimester change.  If you have not already begun following us on twitter (@skokie36), please do, as there are a number of pictures and tweets shared out from the classrooms on the variety of projects happening during our Inquiry period.

Enjoy the sunshine and slightly warmer weather this weekend, and the time together with your family.

Most Sincerely,

Kelly Tess

Dear Parents/Guardians,

March 4, 2018, kicks off the annual Alliance for Early Childhood's Screenbreak week- ( http://www.theallianceforec.org/screenbreak.php ). During Screen Break, families are encouraged to turn off their televisions and other screens for seven days and, together, experience a week with no screens. During the week, there are many alternative activities going on throughout the community.  Click here for more on Screenbreak.

As a school district, we rely on technology to support teaching and learning and to provide resources for our students to develop the four C's of creativity, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration.   We do, however, realize that as a community, we must support our students to make healthy, balanced choices around technology use.

In coordination with Screenbreak, The Winnetka Public Schools will be making it a little easier for families of students in 5th-8th grade to participate by turning off the internet capabilities for our District provided iPads from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., March 4-18, 2018.  Students should plan accordingly, and if they need internet access to complete homework after 10:00 p.m., they will need to access a personal device from home.

Currently, all district provided student devices connect back to our network for internet access, whether they are on our campus or away.  This allows the devices to pass through our federally-mandated internet content filter, no matter where they are connected to wifi.  Please note, no filter can replace adult supervision partnered with open and honest communication and guidelines regarding district iPads or personal cell phones.

Future Ready D36 Update
The Core Team is working to formulate potential models for staff and community review at a special School Board Meeting at Carleton Washburne School at 7:00 p.m. on March 12, 2018. These models are intended to address the District's enrollment imbalance, aging facilities, and to align with the District's vision for teaching and learning. Over the spring, there will be revisions to the models based on feedback from this meeting. It  is anticipated that the Board will approve one of these models in June 2018.
