A newsletter of the Atlanta Knitting Guild: Bringing Atlanta's knitters together

Next meeting - November 2nd - 7:30 p.m.

President's message
Jill Vogin

Hi Friends,
Wow what  a great time we all had last month!  I hope you enjoyed our visit from Marly Bird as much as I did!  A huge thank you to our Major Workshops chair, Kendra Fabry, for a job well done!
At this month's meeting on November 2 nd, we are having the lovely and (extremely) talented Jolie Elder talk to us about Labyrinth knitting.  This is a new technique for many of us, and so it will be great to see how it is done.
In addition, we will be holding our annual 50/50 auction.  Buy a chance to win some money just in time for holiday shopping and support the guild activities at the same time.
Our first mini workshop of the year will be held on Sunday November 12 th.  Several people will be teaching techniques that can used to make bear sweaters.  Details are below and at $10 per person, the price is right!
Lastly, we are going to be migrating our website to a new platform.  Please have patience with us as we make this switch.  Unfortunately, the website will be down for few weeks (end of November/beginning of December). So please be sure to check your email for important updates about Guild activities until we are up and running again.
Looking forward to seeing all of you on Thursday, November 2nd.
Yours in knitting,
Jill

Programs
Novmber Program - Labyrinth Knitting with Jolie Elder

Our November program is labyrinth knitting. This is a technique developed by Debbie New and explained in her 2003 book Unexpected Knitting. How would you like to knit an entire sweater in only 10 or 12 rows? Do you like kaleidoscopic effects? Would you like to make something three-dimensional without separate pieces and seaming? All of these things are possible with labyrinth knitting.

White Elephant
December Program

We will be doing a gift exchange (white elephant) again this December. If you wish to participate, you should wrap a knitting related gift,10$ value, and bring it to the December pot luck. At the meeting, we will switch them around so that everyone who brings a gift will receive a gift. When purchasing your gift, please remember we have members of multiple faiths so please avoid holiday themed items.

Mini -  Workshops
Meg Fisher and Chris Curschmann

WHEN:      Sun. Nov. 12 from 2:00-5:00 pm
WHO:        All knitters (we're inviting Atlanta Knitting Guild & North Georgia Knitting Guild)
WHAT:       Mini-Workshop on a variety of techniques to practice on bear sweaters, cost is $10
WHERE:   SEFAA Center, 3420 W Hospital Ave, Chamblee, GA 30341
WHY:        To learn new skills, practice them on bear sweaters & hopefully get more people to make bear                       sweaters
HOW:        We will start out with an introduction of the teachers and techniques to be taught. We will then                       split into small  groups and teach "speed dating" style so that you can visit the tables that you                          are interested in. The offerings will be:
  • Jolie Elder will teach labyrinth knitting & since the mini-workshop is just 10 days after she speaks about this at our monthly meeting, it should be fresh in our minds
  • Chris Curschmann will teach you how to adapt one look or concept to another
  • Virginia Davis will teach a variety of cast ons & bind offs for different uses
  • Meg Fisher will teach continental knitting with the twist of backwards continental purling
To RSVP for the Mini-Workshop please email Meg at  [email protected]

Pass it Forward
Karleen Buchholz, Carol Hassell and Elizabeth Halberstadt

Women's Shelter

Please bring in toiletries to the November meeting - these will be much appreciated.

Bears

Folks, yesterday afternoon I delivered 94 bears to the Georgia Center! That is the most I have seen for a one-month total. Special thanks to Karleen for the 53 sweaters she completed that were a part of this delivery. The folks at the Center were very happy, needless to say

KROGER

Please register  your  Kroger rewards card and list AKG as the community rewards recipient of their choice.  This, in no way, affects any rewards program you get as a shopper - it simply accumulates points for dollars spent shopping at Kroger and they then cut a check to AKG each quarter.  Easy, pain free way to earn extra $ for the guild.

We Pulled it Off !!
Fall 2017 Post Superstar Report

With our fall Superstar with Marly Bird behind us, I'd like to thank those who worked to make this event happen: Claudia Purgason gave keen insight into planning the budget. I'm so grateful for her help with that and pleased to let you know that we met our goal of breaking even and made a profit that can be used for a deposit for a future Superstar; more on that below! I'd like to thank Alison Lalla, our treasurer for her initiative on tracking orders efficiently, I really took a load off of me!  Claire Kooy deserves a lot of credit for putting all the sign up information on the website in such a timely manner and with careful attention to detail. Thanks to Denise Tokarz our yarn shop liaison for distributing flyers of the event. Thanks to Jill Vogin who as our guild president is filling in all sorts of holes including numerous tasks for Superstar planning. And thanks to all of our class registrants without which we wouldn't be able to out on a great event like this. I've come to appreciate that without a knitting convention in Atlanta, our guild is really filling a hole by in bringing in national teachers so that we can attend workshops without the added cost and hassle of travel.

Looking ahead to future Superstar weekends, we have our sights set high on bringing in some big names and advanced skill  teachers; either for the spring or next year or both. We have made some initial contacts and are waiting to hear back. Our decision will be made based on the calendar (not competing with area fiber events, coinciding with our meeting dates, avoiding holidays and long weekends, availability of St. Luke's and SEFFA, and of course the knitters schedule) and interest (trying to balance the style of who we have recently had to offer a well rounded roster and if we think we can sell enough tickets to cover expenses) all of this is in consultation with the board. We'll keep you posted.  If you'd like to help out, we could use it, so please let us know.

Below is the final data from the event:

Enrollment:
total seats sold= 60

brioche= 17
curvy knits=11

Website Update

Earlier this month, you should have had an email regarding the website. However, due to an unexpected issues, I am postponing migrating the website.  We will have the present website until November 20. Then we will lose the website until the middle of December.  However, during the time we do not have the website, the e-mails for @atlantaknittingguild.org will still work.
If you have any suggestions for the new website, please do not hesitate to e-mail me.  If anyone can do graphic design and help me with the website, please let me know as well.
Thank you very much for your understanding! Claire Kooy

Need help with your knitting?

There is a new website from a Georgia Tech person: https://www.xprtchat.com/
Ed Havens started by surveying knitters about how they dealt with knitting problems.
His solution is online video chat.
Right now, the service is free, as he is testing the concept.
I haven't used it, yet, but I did participate in the survey.
If any of our members need a knitting help desk, they might want to try this service and report back to us about it.
