Getting Minnesota Ready for the 2020 Census
Minnesota benefits from a fully-inclusive and accurate census. Minnesota business relies on census data to make profitable decisions and to create jobs.  We rely on census data to support our strong tradition of civic participation; census data are used to make smart choices to direct the future of our communities.  The census is the fundamental tool we use to fairly allocate power and influence in our government.  However, funding shortfalls for census preparation at the federal level are threatening the accuracy of the 2020 Census. This will be the first internet-response option census;  technology, security, outreach, and messaging must be right. We believe that Minnesota is going to get the census right, despite the challenges created by federal leadership and budget and policy choices. Minnesota business leadership is needed if we are going to realize our goal of an accurate census in Minnesota. The Minnesota Census Mobilization Partnership (MCMP) launched the Census Business Round Table at Sunrise Bank in December, bringing leaders from the business community and regional chambers of commerce together to prepare for local census efforts in Minnesota. Find out how your business can help Minnesota be counted in 2020.

Hennepin County scraps relocation of courtrooms from Edina to Bloomington
Hennepin County court facilities in Edina will no longer be relocated to Bloomington as planned in the next few years, which will force some suburban residents to travel to downtown Minneapolis for their court appointments.  A project to move the courtrooms from the Southdale Library to new quarters at Bloomington Civic Plaza was left on the cutting-room floor during budget negotiations by the Hennepin County Board, which on Tuesday approved the county's 2018 budget.

Panel approves St. Paul-to-airport streetcar concept, but much more work to come
A modern streetcar line should someday connect downtown St. Paul to Bloomington, completing a "transit triangle" formed by the Blue Line and Green Line between Minneapolis, St. Paul and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, according to regional policymakers.
After three years of study and 29 public meetings, the Riverview Corridor's policy advisory committee voted 11-2 on Thursday in support of the future $1.4 billion to $2 billion transit line, which would travel down West Seventh Street in St. Paul and cross the Mississippi River at or near the Minnesota 5 bridge.

Minneapolis Benchmarking Survey
The adage goes: "you can't manage what you don't measure." In 2012, the City of Minneapolis passed an ordinance requiring the city's largest commercial buildings to do just that. Today, twenty-three cities around the country have similar requirements. This ordinance calls for buildings over 50,000 square feet to track energy usage in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and submit data to the City annually. The City then publishes this data so prospective tenants can compare energy efficiency between buildings. We think of it like comparing fuel economy when shopping for new cars. Most building types will receive an ENERGY STAR Score that the City publishes in an annual report.

Bloomington city council to vote on raising tobacco age to 21
More than 200 cities across the country have raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products, and Bloomington, Minnesota could be the next to join that list.  The city council will vote Monday on a proposal to raise the minimum age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products. If approved, Bloomington would be the third city in the metro area to increase tobacco sales from age 18 to 21.  The changes are part of a growing trend to decrease youth smoking. In May,  Edina became the first city  to raise the sales age. St. Louis Park  followed suit  in July.
