Our biggest challenge in prioritizing safety in Avila is:
Ensuring new development follows a well-researched General PIan that reflects community input.
In recent years, we have seen proposals for excessively large development, including the most recent for 15,000 homes in Wild Cherry Canyon. (Read about HERE and HERE.)
The update of the Avila General Plan in process will not be finished for another 3-4 years. Our safety is likely to be significantly compromised by allowing new development to proceed before the General Plan is adopted.
Concerned Citizens for Avila has created a petition requesting a hold on new development approvals until the Update of Avila's General Plan is adopted.
California Government Code 65858 provides the opportunity for the San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors to adopt as an urgency measure an
interim ordinance prohibiting any uses that may be in conflict with the contemplated Update to the Avila General Plan.
By submitting hundreds of signatures to the County Board of Supervisors we hope they will agree that allowing further development in tiny Avila before an updated infrastructure plan will not only diminish Avila's natural beauty and its accessibility to the general public, but will create dangerous conditions for all who visit, work and live in Avila.
