3rd Annual Pursuing the Dream - Tonight!

All are welcome to join H-F for its 3rd Annual Pursuing the Dream event, a celebration of Black History Month and promoting unity within the nation, beginning at 7 p.m. tonight (Jan. 17) in the Mall Auditorium. Founded by alumnus Andre Thomas (Connecticut College), the 
event features theme-based performances by the H-F Band, and members of H-F's choirs and speech team. This year's keynote speaker will be Andre Hughes, founder of Powered by Action and a retired global managing partner at Accenture.

Advanced Academics Showcase - Tomorrow
All community members - especially  current and future H-F students and their parents - are invited to attend the annual Advanced Academics Showcase, an evening dedicated to exploring the school's wide array of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Project Lead the Way, and Media, Visual & Performing Arts Academy courses.  The showcase will be held tomorrow - Thursday, Jan. 18 - from 6:30-8:30 p.m., beginning in the Mall Auditorium. You will have the opportunity to talk to H-F department chairs and teachers about their classes' content and expectations. Additionally, you will get the "real scoop" from current H-F students about their advanced coursework experiences, and you can learn about the college-admissions process from representatives from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, DePauw University and Lawrence Technical University. H-F OPUS Wanderlust Fest - Saturday
Enjoy a live & silent auction, German food and music this Saturday, Jan. 20, in the South Cafeteria for a special event - Wanderlust Fest - to benefit the Viking Orchestra students' performance tour of Germany. This spring break approximately 50 students will be representing the H-F community and performing in Potsdam, Brandenburg and Pegau. Wanderlust Fest, sponsored by H-F OPUS, is designed to help reduce tour expenses. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m., the silent auction bidding will end at 8:30 p.m. and other event activities will end at 10 p.m. Tickets are $12/person at the door or $10/person in advance. Evening Community Coffee: Jan. 22

Would you like more direct information about H-F High School? Would you like more opportunities to speak with school leaders in person? Please join Superintendent Dr. Von Mansfield, Principal Dr. Jerry Lee Anderson, other administrators and Board of Education members, if available, at a  Community Coffee  on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. (immediately prior to the Tri-District Concerts) in the South Building TLC. All are welcome! 
 
College Planning for Juniors - Jan. 24
Parents and Class of 2019 juniors, please join our college consultants - Kevin Coy & Brad Kain - and Midwest Regional Recruitment Director Julie Nelson of Xavier University for a first-hand look at a variety of postsecondary education options. Mrs. Nelson will also provide insight into conducting a successful college search and selection process. College Planning for Juniors & Parents will take place Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Mall Auditorium.
 
Summer School Registration - Jan. 27
Summer School will be held this year from June 11-July 20. Each semester will be a three-week session. Summer School course offerings and fee information are listed in the back of the course description book (click here). Students are encouraged to consult with their school counselor prior to registering for Summer School. Completed registration forms must be turned in with payment at Summer School Registration on Saturday, Jan. 27. Registration will take place in the North Building Cafeteria that day from 8 a.m.-Noon.

Turnabout Dance - Feb. 24
Tickets ($30/person) are now on sale through Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Campus Store for this year's Turnabout Dance: A Red Carpet Affair. The dance is set for Saturday, Feb. 24, from 8-11 p.m. at Tuscany Falls in Mokena. The dance is for Grades 9-12; if you are bringing a non-H-F student as a guest, a guest form must be completed and returned to the Deans' Office by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Students can nominate their friends for Turnabout Court until this Friday at this webpage... For more information, please call the Activities Office at 708-335-5525.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Hundreds of individuals from our community - including many students from H-F High School - made Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this past Monday a day on, instead of a day off. They helped out with a variety of service projects near (organizing a clothing drive for PADS at Flossmoor Community Church; making blankets at Infant Jesus of Prague; collecting crayons at the Village of Flossmoor) and far (cleaning up the forest preserve at Dan Ryan Woods). For example, members of the National Art Honor Society - including President Ruth McManus (at left) - spent the afternoon painting positive messages at Parker Junior High School in Flossmoor. On Friday, students in Mr. O'Neill's Sports Marketing classes had the opportunity to learn from Zach Brockman, H-F '01, and currently the general manager of the Modesto Nuts, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Seattle Mariners. He shared with students his career path, tips for getting started, and the ins and outs of the business side of the national past time.

Edda wins award
Congratulations to the editors and sponsor ( Ms. Mustafah, English) of Edda, H-F's literary and art magazine. The 2017 issue, Chaos Theory, just earned the Most Outstanding Literary & Art Magazine distinction for format, content and presentation from the American Scholastic Press Association! Student submissions for this year's issue, From the Ashes, are due on Feb. 28.

H-F Chess: Conference Champions
The H-F Varsity Chess team captured 1st Place in the SWSC Championship (Blue Division). The team finished with a 13-2 record in conference play. This championship is the first time H-F has finished in 1st since joining the SWSC in 2004! The team was led by junior Perry Hoag (1st Board - 3rd Place in conference) and freshman Malcolm Smith (2nd Board - 8th Place in conference). The team is coached by Mr. Bonges, Science teacher.
