Sunday, March 18 at 9:30 am & 11:30 am.
"James Baldwin"
- The Rev. Dr. Carl Gregg
with the UUCF Choir

Invite a Friend to UUCF
James Baldwin was a complex man who was unafraid to speak truth to power. He said, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." He was also a prominent member of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and was part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Do you have friends, family members, or colleagues who might benefit from Rev. Carl's discussion of James Baldwin this Sunday? If so, it may be a great time to invite them to join you for a Sunday at UUCF.

General Announcements
Annual Pledge Drive

Once a year, we invite members and friends of this congregation to make a financial pledge to let us know how much you anticipate giving to UUCF in the coming year. These pledges are a vital part of helping us budget responsibly to fund our mission.

March is Pledge Month at UUCF, and Pledge Forms were mailed last week to all members and friends of the congregation. If your pledge did not arrive in the mail, please let the UUCF Office know. You can also pledge online anytime at frederickuu.org/pledge.

We are asking you to complete your Pledge Form by the end of March, so that we can complete our budget process in time for the congregation to vote on it at the Annual Meeting.

When you complete your Pledge Form, remember UUCF does not ask you to pledge a specific amount.  However, we do invite you to consider what it might mean for you to give generously in this season of your life.

As an incentive to turn in your pledge early, we will hold a raffle for a $100 Gift Card to the Frederick Downtown Partnership. The gift card is valid at more than 170 downtown Frederick stores, restaurants, theaters, and galleries.
  • Turn in your form by this Sunday, March 18 ---- and receive 1 Raffle ticket
Remember to pledge soon!

Forming a Great Kitchen Team now!  Do you like to cook, bake, or just enjoy working in a team in the kitchen?   On Saturday evening, March 24, our Stewardship Committee is hosting a Wine, Heavy Hors-D'Oeuvres, and Dessert Gala.  We'll be serving a variety of yummy finger foods, as we did last year.  We need a team of wonderful people who can assemble the food during the afternoon, starting at 2 and going until  6:30.  You can work for as little as one hour, or more, of course.  Can you help?  This will be great fun.  The food will be mostly ready but lots of hands are needed for assembly, heating and chilling, and serving.  BAKERS:  The CLC will provide dessert for everyone as a fund-raising Bake Sale, but they really need lots more baked goods.  Can you provide some?  For either joining the Kitchen Team or for bringing baked goods, please contact Nancy Roblin at 301.662.8506 or  [email protected], or sign up on the sheet in the left cabinet in the Atrium.

Your Circle of Life Cooperative Preschool is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 School year. We offer weekday preschool for children aged 3 and 4. Gardening Group: Spring is Just Around the Corner! Rick Anderson, our facilities manager, has asked Alice MacDonald to help coordinate a list of folks who might be interested in helping periodically for an hour or two, as needed, to maintain our flower beds. Tasks could include: weeding, pruning, trimming bushes or planting perennials and bulbs. To join, please email Alice MacDonald at [email protected] or signup at the Adult Ed closet in the Atrium.

Lora Powell-Haney, Director of Religious Education, is off to Chicago again, for Spring Intensives at Meadville Lombard Theological School. She will leave Sunday, March 18 and return March 31, and will be at UUFrederick again on April 1, Easter Sunday. Because of her travel and worship duties, she needs some Easter Bunny helpers in order to get the Annual Egg Hunt set up during the early service that morning. Please email her if you are ready for your ears, at [email protected].

Meditation in Everyday Life Mondays, March 26 thru April 9 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (Chapel)  One often hears that one enters a meditation course to learn to relax. Although relaxing is often one of the byproducts of Buddhist meditation, the true purpose is to be more fully present in one's life, being present on the spot rather than being riveted about according to one's hopes and fears. It is about being open to whatever arises in one's life.  Meditation is making friends with oneself and developing compassion towards others. We can learn to develop friendship with our mind, skill in how to work with speed and difficulty, and a sense of humor. The journey continues by slowly allowing that mind to relax within itself. We let go of struggling with ourselves. We train in being awake in the present moment.  This program is open to both new and long-time meditation practitioners. It will allow participants to begin a new practice or to deepen one if one has already established a practice. Instructor: Dr. Jerry Webster.
Cost: $60 for all three classes (shared with UUCF). Visit: frederickuu.org/ase for more information.  Register at [email protected]

Buddhist monk Bhante Sujatha returns to UUCF:  Easter  Sunday, April 1 at 10:40 a.m.  on "How to Empower Your Mind" (sanctuary). Rumi says, "What you seek is seeking you." The ancient texts of the Buddha tell us that no external condition can be the cause of our happiness, only the mind has that ability. When people understand how they are influenced, the root causes of struggle and what we can do with our minds to make things better, sustainable happiness and radiant joy are the result. (Bhante, a 30+ year Buddhist Monk, is originally from Sri Lanka and is the abbot of the Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple and Meditation Center in Woodstock, IL.)

Kitsune is a 501c3 educational organization, founded in 2016 by a long-time UUCF member.
Our goal is to create more options for independent living and ongoing education in life skills for a growing population of adults with special needs.

Our focus is on the range of issues which challenge full independence but do not meet requirements for public assistance.

Our inspiration is the people in our lives, family and friends, who rely on a little bit of back up from their family and friends. What will they-especially our children- do when we are gone?
