A Message from Our Board President

Happy New Year!  Board Chair Nicholas Kozachenko

Last year was a successful but challenging year for the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation. In June 2017, we closed our fiscal year with an unexpected surplus at the same time that we were forced to close our program store at Stanford.

In October, we saw the departure of our beloved Executive Director of nine years, Vera Packard. However, thanks to the hard work of the HERS Board, its staff, and our hundreds of supporters in the community, HERS is stronger than ever.

I would like to welcome Vera's replacement and our new Executive Director, Tina Fernandez Steckler, to the HERS family. Tina joined us in November and hit the ground running. She brings her extraordinary talents, experience, and connections to HERS, as well as a fresh perspective. I am looking forward to working with her over the coming years.

I am also happy to report that while we had initially feared that we would lose clients due to the closure of the Stanford store, activity at the Fremont and Pleasanton stores is up and exceeding expectations. Clients we thought we would lose are instead coming to one of our other stores. This speaks volumes about the level of care and service our staff is able to provide.

I want to extend my personal thanks to the Board and every HERS staff member. 2017 brought with it many challenges, but because of everyone's hard work and dedication HERS is thriving. We will continue to deliver the best service to our clients and help those who deserve but cannot afford the treatment they need. There is still much work ahead of us, but I am confident in our Board, staff, and our supporters in the community. Thank you.

Happy 20th Anniversary to HERS!

Sincerely,
Nicholas Kozachenko, Esq.

Happy Anniversary to Us!

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2018!

We'll be featuring our history and achievements throughout the year, with special mentions at People with Purpose, the Walk/Run, and other events.

The HERS Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1998 by a team of dynamic women.

Motivated by their concern for women and the high incidence of breast cancer, along with the lack of specific services for breast cancer survivors, a vision for a foundation was created. Our signature program, Bras for Body & Soul, was launched in the founding year.

The founding trio included a breast health consultant, a fund-raising executive, and a tax consultant who is also a breast cancer survivor. We are grateful to these women for their vision and contributions to the Foundation:
  • Tricia J. McMahon
  • Cheryl A. Maloney
  • Nancy J. Vital
We wouldn't have made it this far, or grown so much, without the loyal and committed support of our clients, donors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, and community. HERS has touched thousands of lives in countless healing ways over the last 20 years. Let's keep up the good work!

Look for more about our 20th Anniversary on social media, in this newsletter, and at events. We'll be celebrating all year long!

Staff Updates

Congratulations are in order!

Carlie Lozano, a breast care specialist at the Fremont store, has completed her certification. She is officially a certified breast care specialist, in addition to being a bright, compassionate, and hardworking young woman.

Pam Condy, a certified breast care specialist at Fremo n t and Pleasanton, has welcomed her first grandchild, a beautiful boy named Reid. Have fun being a Grandma!!

Annette Lewellyn has been promoted to Director of Programs. Annette was instrumental in helping us through many transitions last year, and we are grateful for her leadership and dedication.

In other news:

We now have two administrative assistants in a job share arrangement. Please welcome Georgea Tscha (who joined us last summer) and Alayna McGarry

Vicki Goss, our beloved receptionist and assistant at the Pleasanton store, is temporarily on leave. Vicki is dedicated to make sure others get a little extra TLC when they need it. Her Chemo Care Bag Ministry brings much needed comfort to women as they go through treatment. Her presence in the store brings warmth and comfort, too. We wish her well and look forward to her return.
