Celebrating Valor: Suncoast HS Hosts Virtual Honor Flight for Local Veterans
Students at Suncoast Community High School honored nearly 50 World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans who were not physically able to make a trip to Washington D.C. with the virtual trip of a lifetime.

The students, with the help of their advisor, Mr. Traill, organized a Virtual Honor Flight including a luncheon, video of the monuments in Washington D.C. dedicated to them and a welcome home celebration with community members waving flags and cheering on the heroes.

The day was full of cheers, smiles and some tears at the veterans reflected on their time in combat and that these young men and women spent their time to make sure they knew how much their dedication to the country is appreciated.  Watch the video...

Lynn University Basketball Team Mentors Students at Boca ES
Every Tuesday, members of the Lynn University Fighting Knights basketball team spend their morning on the campus of Boca Raton Elementary School. The players read to the students, mentor and assist in the classrooms as their way of giving back to the community, while also bringing joy to their own lives.

The idea came about as the basketball coach for the team, whose child attends the school, realized there was an opportunity for his players to make an impact on these young people. Watch the video...


85-Year-Old GED Student Proves It's Never Too Late to Achieve Your Dreams
Around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings, Gladys Tomlin enters her classroom at  Glades Central High School , pulling out her heavy GED prep book complete with tattered sticky notes protruding from the pages. 

She has been working all day, like her fellow classmates, who go to their  Adult & Community Education classes at night to prepare for the GED tests that will earn them high  school diploma.

This scene is repeated by hundreds of students throughout the Adult Education programs in Palm Beach County schools every evening. So what makes Ms. Tomlin any different from her peers? Born in 1932, Ms. Tomlin is 85 years old. And she is determined.

"It's on my bucket list to get my high school diploma," she explained. "It's something I want to do before I die." Watch the video...



New Horizons ES Teacher Named #ThankATeacherPBC Teacher of the Week

Last week's  #ThankATeacherPBC   Thursday was a special one! We surprised Ms. Neus Sastre of  New Horizons Elementary School  with the  Teacher of the Week Award.

Ms. Sastre is a music teacher in the International Spanish Academy (ISA) at New Horizons. She came to teach in the United States in 2015 as part of a partnership between the School District  and the Ministry of Education in Spain. In addition to teaching music classes, she also serves as the Choir Director and the young men's Drum Circle sponsor at the school. 

Ms. Sastre will be returning to Spain this year once her exchange internship expires, leaving a huge void in the hearts of students, faculty and staff at New Horizons. Click here to watch the surprise announcement!

One essay could be the key to four years of college tuition for your child!

The  Florida Prepaid College Foundation is a proud sponsor of Governor Rick Scott's  Black History Month student essay contest - "A Celebration of Innovative African-American Leaders." This year's topic is about an African-American scientist, inventor, scholar or educator, and their influence on the state of Florida. Three lucky winners will be selected to receive a 4-Year Florida College Plan scholarship from the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

To enter the contest, students must write a 500-word (max) essay on the topic and submit it by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018.
