While praying recently, I had a thought.  It felt like a good thought, like an insight.  A few weeks have gone by, and it still feels like an insight, so I think I'll share it with you.  I was praying and thinking about forgiveness.  I've had enough experience of forgiveness to recognize that it's basically a get-out-of-jail-free card, for both the forgiver and the forgivee.  That's true here and now.  Anger and grudges are prisons.  We think we're hurting the other person with our anger, but we're mainly hurting ourselves, and forgiveness unlocks the prison door.  That get-out-of-jail-free card thing is also true in eternity.  "If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you." - Matthew 6:14.

But it's not always easy, right?  When we've been hurt, it can take a while for the pain to ease.  It can take time, and perhaps prayer, for our minds to clear enough that we're ready to forgive.  I've noticed in my own life that the time between injury and readiness to forgive is getting shorter.  I'm making progress.  So the thought occurred to me, if I keep making progress, that time will get shorter and shorter.  If I make enough progress, the "forgiveness delay" will shrink to zero.  I'll be able to forgive as the other person is hurting me, like Jesus on the cross.  "Forgive them Father, they know not what they do."  I think we have a name for the action of forgiving with no delay: turning the other cheek.

If you have prayer nuggets you'd like to share with the parish, email Bill Marty, [email protected] .
