H IGH SCHOOL PE NEWS

High School Physical Education has just finished their off campus units of bowling and skating which were a huge success! We want to thank all of our wonderful parents who helped make this happen: Kirk Mulfinger, Michelle Chor, Susan Hainze, Jessica Nadelman, Jeff Johnson, Betsy Johnson, Kelly Skaran, Yubo Yang and Dan Kihanya. We truly appreciate all your help with driving.

During the bowling unit we had two turkeys (3 strikes in a row) by Peter Wang and Kai Damstrom. Our overall bowling champion was Michael Bae (he bowled a 180 on his final round). Congratulations, well done.
PTSA NEWS
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello Everyone

When you play the Game of Life, you are given choices of career or college at the start and then various life choices happen to derail you or provide success on your journey. Well, I think life choices can happen at a much earlier time than college and I think the game would be more interesting if we factored in HS choices.
I am sure many of you have heard there is vaping at Bellevue high schools. IS offered a parent discussion on vaping to our IS HS community a couple of weeks ago with the YES behavioral Health Support Specialist, Alex Iani. We had 5 attendees.  Most were attending because they were interested in what is vaping. If I am raising your alarm at this point, my point is to raise your awareness about vaping and choices. IS is an excellent school, we have a strong academic focus but as Melinda Breeze, HS Counselor, recently told me regarding my concern of how our community would view vaping and choices.

"I completely understand all of your thoughts about the shock that parents might feel. I also think it's important that we ease families into understanding that teenagers everywhere, regardless of family background, financial situation, religion, race, or academic success, sometimes experiment with drugs and make poor decisions and that these can turn into serious issues in some situations. Exposing families early on would help them be proactive in case a situation arises."

Our support of every student is to also understand our students needs and actions. By all of us becoming aware of vaping, we can then understand some of the choices being made, work to change this choice by some students and support our schools' efforts in this area.

Please take a moment to take our Question of the Week survey on vaping. The survey is completely anonymous, and we like to share these responses with the administration, so they too can know our IS community. If you did not take the time to attend the vaping discussion but want to be aware of vaping, check out the link to the presentation. http://www.bsd405.org/international/2018/01/parent-ed-addictionvaping/

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Results from last week's Question of the Week can be found here.
A NOTE ON MORNING DROP-OFF AND PARKING

Thank you for ensuring the safety of all of our students and staff during our busy morning drop-off time. Please help us maintain a safe arrival period for all by helping us with the following:

  • Ensure that we keep the Metro & Safe Lane clear from car traffic at all times so that we may continue to honor our agreement with Metro Transit which allows us to maintain service to IS.
  • Due to such limited parking for staff and students, all students should be dropped-off from the Student Drop-Off & Pick-Up Only Lane.  Please refrain from using parking spaces in the morning in the Staff or Student Permitted Areas.  There are a limited number of visitor spots that are accessible from the Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up Only Lane.
Families have found that leaving just 10 minutes earlier can have a significant impact on how long they wait in line to drop-off.  Students can also help with traffic flow by ensuring they have all of the items they are bringing to school ready to go upon approach to the drop-off zone.  Thank you for your partnership!
