TOWN NEWS

Message from Town Administrator
Gary Ezovski

Last week I asked if anyone ever wondered how much we send to the landfill or the recycling center each year and left everyone hanging over their keyboards anxious to see the data.  Well the wait is over!

Our recycle coordinator provided some good information recently.  It probably isn't as significant as some may have hoped, but I hope it raises some thought and efforts to recycle.  There is no magic here. The table below lists our experience back to 2013.  The waste numbers are tons delivered to the central landfill and recycle center.  It is easy to see that when we apply reasonable effort, we reduce the volume and weight of our solid waste and increase our recycled material.  As you can see, our recycle rate has varied by as much as 5% of the total, with a peak in 2015 at 32% and valley in 14 at 27%.  Last year we recycled 30% of waste on a weight basis.  Given that neither our population nor our process has changed significantly from 13 to 17, it seems our individual determination to optimize recycling is a significant variable.  Is it enough to simply try to remind people to target best practice?  Our new Recycle Coach App is certainly an effort to that end, but we are open to any ideas for improving our recycle rate.    Our charge to dispose of each ton of solid waste increased last year from $32 to $39.50.  That is a 23% increase.  As the central landfill is exhausted, that cost will continue to increase.  Efforts to reduce our total waste volume and optimize recycling will be important to limiting our cost for disposal.  Many have already downloaded the Recycle Coach app, which we hope will help to improve our performance and reduce our cost.  Can we do better?  With very little effort I think we can achieve a 35% recycle rate that will reduce our cost and do what we can to preserve landfill life.  What do you think?

North Smithfield Recycling -- We Now Have an App for That.

In an effort to put trash & recycling collection schedules at your fingertips, North Smithfield Recycling has paired with Recycle Coach to offer a free web and mobile app easily added to smartphones or tablets.  Now residents can see the Recycle Department calendar, details of our collection programs, and learn how to become a better recycler quickly and easily anytime they want this information.

The calendar feature displays trash collection days for your specific address and will even update for trash holiday weeks.  This feature will also display our Recycle Center hours, our curbside yard waste season, white goods Saturday dates, and Eco-Depot and other events.

And to make things even easier, you can have Recycle Coach send you reminders.   Get an email or text message for upcoming events or special collections.  It couldn't be simpler.

"We hope with easy information and reminders sent to your phone or directly through emails, residents will understand all the recycling programs we offer and take advantage of them.  More recycling participation means more recycling in NS, and less trash being landfilled from our community.  It's a win all around," explains Donna Kaehler, recycling coordinator.
The Recycle Coach app is free to download and available from ITunes Store and Google Play. Click here for the web app that is linked on the Town of North Smithfield website. For more information, call 767-2200 x345.
