Intergenerational Programs
Teen Programming

ONEgeneration's Spring session of Teen programming at John R. Wooden High School started in February. Students from this schools' Girls Build LA Club visited the ONEgeneration Intergenerational Campus to learn about ways they can get involved and volunteer after school. We look forward to partnering with these students and helping them find a way to connect to another generation in a meaningful way.
We are also offering a series of speakers to the students (including Teen Parents or those living with young children in the home) that range in topics generally not covered in their daily curriculum. These engaging presentations have cover the dangers of "Texting While Driving", "Marijuana Use and Vaping" and "the effects of smoking around young children and infants". In addition coping skills are discussed including anger management, conflict resolution and relationship building.
ONEgeneration's Intergenerational JOY Program
Joining Old & Young

Recently as part of our Joining Young and Old intergenerational program, 17 students from UCLA completed their winter session of service learning "Frontiers in Human Aging" course with our Adult Daycare program. Our seniors started their day being greeted by these helpful volunteers with smiling faces. These compassionate students helped our more challenged seniors in activities and would also just sit and listen and talk with those not interested in participating in an activity at that time. The social interactions for our seniors with dementia were just as meaningful and enjoyable for these young students eager to reach an aging population.

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner: Atrial Fibrillation
This month’s column will continue the discussion of heart disease, specifically the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm, atrial fibrillation. Normal heart rhythm is regular, between 60 and 100 beats per minute, with a constant interval between each beat. The heart has four chambers: the upper two are the atria and the lower two are the ventricles. With each beat of the heart, an electrical discharge (current) causes the muscle of the atria and ventricles to contract and pump blood. The SA (sinoatrial node) is the heart’s electrical pacemaker. The frequency at which the SA node discharges determines the rate at which the heart beats. The current passes from the SA node in the right atria, through specialized tissue, ultimately reaching the left ventricle which pumps blood throughout the major portions of the body. In a normal heart, the rate of atrial contraction is the same as the rate of ventricular contraction.

Atrial fibrillation is caused by abnormal electrical discharges that cause the atria to beat chaotically and irregularly—out of coordination with the ventricles. The irregular beating reduces the ability of the atria to pump blood into the ventricles, and usually causes the heart to beat too rapidly.

Diminished delivery of blood to the body lead to symptoms that include:

  • Palpitations, (fluttering in the chest)
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain

Complications of atrial fibrillation include heart failure and stroke. One half million new cases are diagnosed every year in the U. S.

Retirement Congratulations
to our long-time
Home-bound Meal Driver
Sandy is retiring in his 80's after being with ONEgeneration for over 23 years delivering meals to frail and home-bound older adults. He took great enjoyment building relationships with his meal recipients, taking the time to talk to each person and ask how they were doing. Sandy always has a smile and a story to tell to both staff and his meal clients. He will be missed by all those on his route that looked forward to seeing him daily, in many cases the only person they interacted with. We wish Sandy a relaxing and enjoyable retirement after so many dedicated years of service.

Charitable Giving: Thinking Outside the Box

As a CPA, I am often asked about tax advantageous ways to give to charities. One of my favorite recommendations to an individual is to contribute appreciated stock, bonds or mutual funds which you have held more than a year. If an individual contributes stock which has appreciated in value since the initial purchase, the individual may deduct the value of the stock at the time of the contribution as an itemized deduction and does not have to pay capital gains tax on the increase in value.

Here is an example of what you may save:
Assumptions:
(1) Long term capital gains rate used of 15% federal and CA state tax of 9.3% for a combined rate of 24.3%.
(2) Ordinary income bracket of 24% and CA state tax of 9.3% for a combined rate of 33.3%.
(3) Federal tax benefit of CA state tax deduction not considered due to potential deduction limitation.

For this transaction to be advantageous, the taxpayer must be able to itemize their deductions. In 2018, the standard deduction for single filers will be $12,000 and $24,000 for joint filers.
One rule to remember here is that the deduction is limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). This differs from a 60% limit for donations of cash and short-term property. You can still carry forward unused deductions for five years.

Tales From the Road

Maria, an 86 year old ONEgeneration homebound meal client, asked her daughter to call recently to say how thankful her mother was to ONEgeneration. The homebound meals were so important to her since she can no longer cook and the meals make her feel less of a burden. She also wanted to say she appreciated the little extras ONEgeneration does as well like the Valentine’s Day candy rose she received with her meal as a favor made by ONEgeneration high school volunteers; Maria positioned it in a special place so she could look at it because she said it was so beautiful and made her smile.
