  Teacher's Spotlight

Every person has that one teacher who they can go to when school or life gets rough. A person who will not judge them, but help them wield the strength to move forward and make something positive out of the situation. For many of our students that person is Ms. Rogers, our 8th grade Social Studies teacher. She has a kind and gentle soul that makes her approachable to her students and coworkers, yet she is stern and discerning when her students need it.

Having held several positions at HSA over the course of 14 years, including one year as a dean, she is always willing to put in the work to make sure that students leave her classroom as better citizens and even better people. She has opened the door for our students uncovering many opportunities for them including last year's trip to the Ohio Supreme Court and Statehouse. Each y ear, she makes herself even more accessible to her students by having a Girls Lock In, which g ives students a place to speak about personal and school issues in an understanding environment. Ms. Rogers also headed the girl's cheerleading team during the boy's basketball season, creating another creative outlet for our students. Ms. Rogers is undoubtedly a powerhouse in the classroom and in the community and we are very lucky to have her as part of our staff.

Thank you for being an amazing person who our students can trust and rely on Mrs. Rogers!!!

Guest Speakers from VCAS

Meet Kayla, Jason and Abe!   Last Friday, 3 members of the Veteran Companion Animal Services (VSAS), a local non-profit charity that seeks to match veterans with a companion dog from local shelters, spoke to a Character Ed class and the Snickerdoodles Club. Kayla and Jason shared the mission of VCAS with students. Jason, a VCAS board member and a retired military member who served multiple tours in the Middle East, shared insights into what it is like living with PTSD, a condition that is challenging so many of our veterans.

Abe, the service dog, took a break from work for a few minutes to personally meet each student before saying goodbye.
The Snickerdoodles Club is partnering with VCAS to help veterans and their companion dogs. We are organizing a donation drive for dog supplies.   Contact Dr. Raschke for more details or click here for more information about the visit and how to donate.

Special thanks to Kayla, Jason and Abe for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Thank you Jason for your service to this country!

Concept Science and Engineering Fair Design Contest

This winter several of our students entered their sketches in the Concept Science and Engineering Fair Design Contest. Any student in grades 5 through 12 was eligible to take part in the cover design contest. E ntries of the top ten finalists will be displayed at the Fair and the winning design will be printed on program booklets and t-shirts. The sketches were centered around the motto "Cool the Planet-One degree at a time" and the rest was up to the students imagination.

With dozens of students submitting their design for the competition, this year's 8th grader Fatima received great news that her design has earned her 2nd place. We are so proud of her craft and the beautiful design that she came up with.

Congratulations to Fatima for her success and additional thanks go to Ms. Betsko for her encouragement of her students!
