Dear Friend:

How can we get nonprofit CEO's to ask for money?

If you have ever dealt with a nonprofit CEO, you know that in most cases they are reluctant to ask for money.  And, without active participation by nonprofit leaders, it is difficult to make the fundraising process work.  How can we get this to change?

There are no easy answers, but here are some suggestions that just might help.

First, get the CEO to non-fundraising meetings with major donor prospects in their homes or offices.  Most CEO's are too busy to set up these appointments.  You need to do it for them.

Second, you need to stress with the CEO the importance of the nonprofits leaders role in the fundraising process.  Most potential major donors want to know if the leader is involved, and this only truly can be shown eye ball to eye ball.

Third, every CEO needs coaching and training on how a successful ask takes place.  This is your job , or one that must be done by a development professional.

And, finally, the CEO needs to make his or her first calls on low hanging fruit.  In short, start your fundraising work with the CEO with people you know are likely to give at an initial donor meeting.

Sincerely,

Douglas M. Lawson, Ph.D.

BUSH CENTER STARTS OFF 2018 WITH PAIR OF $10 MILLION GIFTS FROM HIGHLAND CAPITAL & BOEING - - The new year has begun with good news at the George W. Bush Presidential Center and connected George W. Bush Institute in Dallas. Highland Capital Management has gifted the center with $10 million endowed to back a public program series called Engage at the Bush Center.  In addition, the Boeing Corporation made a $10 million commitment to support the institute's Military Service Initiative to help post 9/11 veterans. Highland Capital Management is a founding benefactor of the Bush Center, having contributed more than $5 million since 2012. "We are impressed by the Bush Center's national influence and impact in our community," said Highland Capital Co-founder and President Jim Dondero. "Events like the Engage series foster important dialogue regarding pressing policy issues.   Highland Capital Management is proud to support this work and be part of the center's long-term vision." Separately, Boeing's gift supports Bush Institute efforts to help post 9/11 veterans transition successfully to civilian life. "Laura and I have dedicated the rest of our lives to supporting our veterans and their families," noted former President George W. Bush. - - Holly Haber,

MARK WALBERG AND AGENCY WILL DONATE $2 MILLION TO TIME'S UP AFTER OUTCRY OVER PAY - - Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg are starring in the movie "All the Money in the World."  When scenes in the film were re-shot to remove Kevin Spacey and replace with Christopher Plummer, Ms. Williams received a per diem of $80 for 10 days of work while Mr. Wahlberg negotiated a fee of $1.5 million.   In a recent announcement, Mark Wahlberg and his talent agency, William Morris Endeavor, will donate $2 million to a fund dedicated to fighting pay inequity and harassment of women in Hollywood.  The donation will be made in the name of Michelle Williams, Mr. Wahlberg's co-star in the movie "All the Money in the World," after an outcry about the pay discrepancy in reshoots for the film. The two actors are represented by the same agency.  Fellow actors expressed outrage at the pay disparity when it came to light.  "Over the last few days my reshoot fee for 'All the Money in the World' has become an important topic of conversation," Mr. Wahlberg said in a statement.  "I 100% support the fight for fair pay and I'm donating the $1.5M to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams' name." - - Jeffrey C. AMAZON'S JEFF BEZOS TO GRANT $33 MILLION IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DACA STUDENTS - - Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Jeff Bezos is granting $33 million in college scholarships for undocumented immigrant high-school graduates in the U.S., according to TheDream.US, a nonprofit education group.  The grant, made by Mr. Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie Bezos, will fund 1,000 scholarships for students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, status.  Each recipient would receive a total of $33,000 in scholarship aid over four years to cover the costs of their education.  Nearly 3,000 students currently are part of the group's program for assisting the young immigrants known as Dreamers.  Mr. Bezos, 54 years old, said in a press release that his father came to the U.S. from Cuba at age 16 unable to speak English. Bezos said, "With a lot of grit and determination-and the help of some remarkable organizations in Delaware-my dad became an outstanding citizen, and he continues to give back to the country that he feels blessed him in so many ways." - - Laura Stevens, The Wall Street Journal, January 12, 2018.  Read more.
