President Obama's Action Plan for Climate Change

PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS ANNOUNCED A SERIES OF EXECUTIVE ACTIONS TO REDUCE CARBON POLLUTION, PREPARE THE U.S. FOR THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, AND LEAD INTERNATIONAL EFFORTS TO ADDRESS GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE.

"As President, and as a parent, I refuse to condemn our children to a planet that's beyond fixing. The shift to a cleaner energy economy won't happen overnight, and it will require tough choices along the way. But a low-carbon, clean energy economy can be an engine of growth for decades to come. America will build that engine. America will build the future. A future that's cleaner, more prosperous, and full of good jobs - a future where we can look our kids in the eye and tell them we did our part to leave them a safer, more stable world." -President Obama, during his Weekly Address, May 31, 2014

"When it comes to preserving our planet and all living things on it, it's time to be bold.  We support EPA's new carbon rule that could cut carbon pollution by up to 25%!"  Time to Act On Climate!

Green Existing Schools Web Trainings

Making the commitment to green existing schools across a campus or district requires a comprehensive plan that integrates two processes: one focused on how each school facility will improve building performance and another on adopting sustainable operations and maintenance policies and best practices. The LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance rating system provides a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green solutions. These web trainings help school and district staff organize efforts around sustainability initiatives using this framework.

Each training addresses specific steps and strategies that can be put in place by educators, parents and staff to green existing school facilities. We recommend printing out the first page of the accompanying Companion Guide to help focus your thoughts while watching the chosen training.

Examples: "How to Green Existing Schools: Overview","Waste Management", "Materials and Sustainable Purchasing" and more

Zayad Future Energy Global High School Prize

The primary aim of the Global High Schools category is to inspire future generations across the globe by instilling an ethos of sustainability from an early age, including an appreciation of issues in energy, and broader sustainability.

The Global High Schools category will therefore not focus on past activities of the school. Instead, each school will submit a detailed proposal for a project, and the Prize will become a grant that enables the project's completion. While the main objective is to promote sustainability in schools, special emphasis of the proposed project should be on specific measurable initiatives to promote renewable energy and sustainability, which may include improvements in energy or water efficiency, or a reduction in waste.

Grant money will be allocated to one school in each of five regions: The Americas, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Asia. Each regional winner will be allocated up to $100,000, with the final Prize amounts decided based on financial information submitted in the project proposals.

CLIF Kid $10,000 Educational Scholarship

Dear Natural Teachers and educators,

I wanted to make sure you saw last week's announcement about the opportunity for kids in your community to win a $10,000 educational scholarship through this year's CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Contest.

For the fourth year in a row, the Children & Nature Network was selected by CLIF Kid as their Outdoor Play Partner for the annual CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Contest. Their goal for the contest is to inspire kids to balance screen time with creative play in nature.

Why would this matter to you? Parents in your community are looking for creative ways to help kids unplug this summer and get outside.

All kids ages 6 through 12 can create and submit an original backyard game, now through July 3, 2014, for the chance to win a variety of fun prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 educational scholarship, a bike and helmet, plus a block party to share their game with family, friends and classmates in their own hometown.

Our simple request: please, share this with parents and students. Here's the link with all the details and entry information:

Ten Fabulous Facts About Butterflies

For great wildlife gardening, it is important to know about pollinators. They can be birds, but most often they are insects that, while feeding on flowers, will help spread pollen to other plants for healthy garden propagation. Bees are the best known pollinators and America's food supplies depend on them.  But, most peoples' favorite pollinator of all time is the butterfly (beautiful and no stinger!) Here are a few things about them you may not know.

1. They are (nearly) everywhere

Butterflies are found on every continent but Antarctica. There are an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 different species. Their cousin, the moth, is even more numerous. About 140,000 species of Moths have been counted all over the world. They come in every color in the rainbow and many have brilliant patterns that are true works of art in nature.

2. Many sizes
Butterflies range from tiny little guys that are just 1/8th of an inch across to a full 12 inches. A butterfly cousin, the Atlas Moth, is the largest and grows to about a foot in wing span.
