The Silver Perspective

It's exciting to be entering another fall season action-packed with busy travel opportunities. And I know we all are keeping an eye on the year end of 2016 already. But I want to talk about another end too. It's one that we've all been contemplating exhaustively and comprehensively. When is the end coming for this cyclical hotel upswing? One thing I can tell you with certainty is that it will not be due to an oversupply in the market. I heartily agree with Hotel News Now editor Jack Corgel that there are strong reasons why, in the immediate future, oversupply won't be the downfall of our industry. Basically we got started late with construction and coupled now with the high cost of building and the overall limited suppliers of funding (with stricter lending restrictions), we find ourselves  in a trough next to other periods of high growth building. That puts us in an immediate advantage of not making the same mistake of the past. There are also no big incentives from the government that would help real estate investors depreciate their investments in land improvements over a long period of time. That was a big motivator that we don't see today. Finally, demand for rooms continues to grow and grow faster than supply is being created. This leads to a somewhat peaceful harmony for the immediate future and bodes well for the cycle continuation. So, let's keep enjoying the ride and look forward to a stable rest of the year.
