About the NLLD
The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee, and Drainage District (known as NLLD) was formed in 1992 to provide drainage and flood protection services for the northern portion of Lafourche Parish, including the entire parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.
The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals, and over 40 pump stations.

Lockport to Larose Levee Improvements

A project to strengthen Reaches C4, C5 and D1 of the Lockport to Larose Hurricane Protection Levee Project will begin in the weeks ahead at nearly $900,000 under budget.
The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee and Drainage District (NLLD) awarded the construction contract for the first phase of this project on December 19 to low bidder Onshore Materials, LLC in the amount of $2.9 million, significantly less than the $3.8 million originally estimated for the levee improvements.
When completed, the project will include clearing, excavating and shaping the levee embankments and increasing the overall height of the levee to + 7.5' elevation to stabilize flood protection along the 40 Arpent line. The project will also widen the internal drainage canal to increase drainage storage capacity in the area.

In December, Sealevel Construction began work on the Valentine Return Structure, which is being constructed in the borrow canal at the intersection of the Valentine Return Levee and the C4 Hurricane Protection Levee.
The structure will consist of headwalls with large gated culverts to regulate and control the flow of water through the borrow canal and improve flood protection in the Valentine area.
The Clotilda/Mathews Canal Levee Project that began in October is already almost 30 percent complete and will help shore up the flood protection for Gheens and surrounding communities, according to the North Lafourche Levee District.
The existing levee is in a precarious state and could have failed if the district did not repair and stabilize it, said Dwayne Bourgeois, executive director of the levee district.
"It's one of those levees where a lot of folks would look at it and not think it protects much, but it protects access to Gheens and some adjacent communities. We had to get on this now because it's one of those situations where the existing levee is precarious, so the need to stabilize it and maintain it is accelerated," Bourgeois said.
The $970,000 project was awarded to Low Land Construction in September, but the company began construction in October because of weather delays. Bourgeois said the work will probably be completed before the contract deadline of Sept. 18 as long as the weather cooperates.

NLLD Board President Cory Kief and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois discussed the unique flood protection needs of North Lafourche with high-ranking U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) officials during the annual Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association (MVFCA) meeting December 7-9 in New Orleans.
USACE officials included Lt. General Todd Semonite, who is Commanding Officer and Chief Engineer for the USACE in Washington D.C., and USACE Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division Major General Richard Kaiser.
In addition to NLLD being a member of MVFCA, Kief represented the Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana (ALBL) at the conference as ALBL president, and Bourgeois represents the ALBL on the Executive Committee of the MVFCA.
