Rector's Ramblings

Every once in a while the absurdity of my (our) life strikes me. This time it was while I was looking for the strawberry jelly that is made with Truvia.  Harris Teeter used to carry it, but they stopped. There are sugar free varieties made with Splenda and other sugar substitutes, but I like the one with stevia best. As I scoured the shelves and the dozens of jams and jellies, I was frustrated that the one I wanted was not there. Why can't they just carry the one that I like, I wondered, as I began to feel a bit put out by the whole thing. And then it hit me.

I don't know what triggered it; perhaps it was the Holy Spirit groaning in frustration with me, but I suddenly realized how ridiculous it was that I was annoyed because I couldn't get the jelly I wanted. The jelly! As I spun slowly around, I took in the racks of bread, the cases of meats, cheeses, and seafood, the cornucopia of fresh fruits and vegetables in the distance, the rows of wines, and the wall of beer. There was so much food within sight, that I could choose from thousands of options, and find what I needed to feed myself for weeks, if not months, if I had to. And I could virtually buy anything there I wanted with a simple swipe of the credit card at the self-checkout, without worry that I would be able to pay the bill when it showed up next month. And I was annoyed that I couldn't find my jelly of choice.

ECW Scholarship
A newly established scholarship fund created by the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women is being inaugurated this year. Annually, the Christ Church Frederica ECW Scholarship Fund for Women will provide $2,500 to a female high school graduate pursuing a degree through an academic or technical college or university. The student must be of the Episcopal faith and hale from Glynn or McIntosh County.

"Many of our Christ Church women have, over the last fifteen years, donated to this wonderful effort to establish a scholarship program for our young ladies. The fruit of our gifts will now benefit many young women with their future educational goals. In establishing this scholarship we honor those who came before us and saw this as just a dream... but now it is a reality and we could not be more pleased," noted Jane Watson, President, Episcopal Church Women.

Applications may be accessed via the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation website here  and are due no later than April 21, 2018. Candidates will be screened and interviewed by a scholarship committee and the award will be made in May.

Outreach

Docents and Greeters Needed in Christ Church!

Christ Church needs docents and greeters! As the team of volunteer docents has diminished over the last few months, due to illness and retirements, so have the number of days we are able to keep the church open to visitors. Right now, we have just enough volunteers to man the church Tuesday through Sunday, in the afternoons, until the end of April, but after that we will need some additional folks to help.

Therefore, the docent team is seeking volunteers for monthly shifts from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. There is a training session before docents embark on this wonderful opportunity to share the remarkable story of our church. Please contact Fred Collins at [email protected] to become a docent and Sharon Joy at 912-638-8683 to volunteer short-term as a greeter on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies will be packing again on Tuesday, March 27th, at 9:30 am, in the Parish Hall. (Please note the earlier than usual time on the 27th!) If you've never had the opportunity to partake in this rewarding activity, you are most welcome to join them on the assembly line! For more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].

Cross Collection on Display at Epworth
The Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum at Epworth-by-the-Sea Conference and Retreat Center, is happy to announce a special exhibition in the Atrium of the Museum which will be on display from Ash Wednesday  to Easter Sunday , the whole season of Lent.

The exhibition is the cross collection of one of our own, the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown. The crosses represent a collection gathered over a 40-year ministerial career and come from all over the world. They are made of a huge variety of materials and reflect many different interpretations of one of our most sacred symbols.  Though more than 90% of the crosses have been gifts, no cross has ever been repeated and never has the entire collection been on display at one time.  Dr. Brown is particularly pleased to offer this exhibition for the enjoyment of the members of Christ Church, Frederica.  May the cross, as a symbol, remind us of sacrifice and commitment and, especially, of the power of love.

Up with People!
Up with People is coming to Glynn County, March 26 to April 2, 2018. Up with People was founded on the principle of using music as a means to communicate with and inspire people. In each city we visit, Up with People cast members perform a vibrant and inspiring musical stage show that brings the community together to enjoy a night of entertainment while sparking people to take action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries and the world. It's fun for the whole family and an experience you'll never forget!

The Advance Team is looking for host families for the cast members. Host families provide a place to sleep, limited transportation and some meals. While the cast is in town they will be getting involved volunteering in the local community. You can learn more about the 100 member cast from 20 different countries  here. If you have any questions, please contact Ashton at  [email protected] about her experience while traveling with Up with People.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
