GALA was organized to promote the arts as an essential component of a healthy community. We believe that artistic expression is a community's greatest legacy for future generations. GALA will increase awareness and appreciation of the arts by way of exhibits, instruction, theater productions, musical programs and provision of scholarships to students in local schools.

We are continually working and planning our spring and summer events. I myself, am trying to fit in time to work on my own art work for the upcoming shows. So much to do, so little time. My mother-in-law would say to me the older you get the shorter the days. Boy, that is so true!
We are getting closer to opening our art gallery here in Winchendon. We are now working on creating an Art Gallery Committee. Would you be interested in joining this committee? We need a few key people to help with deciding what days the art gallery should be open and what the hours will be, maintain a volunteer schedule of who will help in the gallery, and help with scheduling artists to do solo shows, classes, and workshops. We will also have a kiddy corner where children will be able to do hands on activities. Would you like to join this committee or volunteer for an hour or two? If so, let me know.
I hope you will participate in our upcoming Spring Show in May and start to think about what you would like to enter. Also, it's time to think about what to paint in Fitchburg for our "Paint the Town" show with Gallery Sitka in July. Spring will soon be upon us and it will start to turn green. Surprise us with green, white, or something else.
Our Distinguised Judges for our GALA Spring Show in May will be:
- Peter Laytin, Photography Professor, Fitchburg State University
- Tamar Russell Brown, Owner of Gallery Sitka, Fitchburg, MA
- Ann Capodagli, Owner of Boulder Gallery, Fitchburg MA
Our Distinguised Judges for our "Paint the Town" Gallery Sitka Show in July will be:
- Jennifer Jones, Fitchburg Cultural Alliance
- Susan Navarre, Fitchburg Historical Society
- Susan Wadsworth, FSU Art History Professor
- Kledia Spiro, Marketing at The Fitchburg Art Museum (and an artist)
The 1st place winning award of $150 will be sponsored by NewVue Communities.
Lastly, I would like to give a warm thank you to the Massachusetts Cultural Council this year! We applied for grants to help support our Spring Show and for materials to plan children workshops in our new gallery. Thank you to the LCC's of Gardner, Winchendon, and Templeton! Without these LCC's it would be difficult to do these FREE events for the public. Thank you for supporting our arts and culture. You Rock!

Art in the Family
Liz Winchester-Larson and Harriet Winchester
The Bagel Mill - Cafe and Bakery 145 Grove Street Extension Peterborough, NH March 2 - April 29, 2018
The Winchester sisters, Liz Winchester-Larson and Harriet Winchester, are pleased to exhibit their artwork at The Bagel Mill - Cafe and Bakery, 145 Grove Street Extension, Peterborough, NH March 2 - April 29, 2018.
Growing up in New Hampshire, Elizabeth and Harriet Winchester began drawing and painting as youngsters. By the early '70s, each had earned BFA degrees, Liz from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and Harriet from Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, RI. Since 1995 they have enjoyed showing their art together again. Liz Winchester-Larson has a tiny studio in Keene, NH filled with the objects and plants that inspire her still-life paintings. An artist and print-maker for more than forty years, she especially enjoys the medium of colored pencil. Harriet Winchester settled in Nashua, NH with her engineer husband, Jim Kuzdrall. Working in a realistic style with oils, she enjoys both still-life subjects and New England landscapes, including a recent interest in portraying old trees.
Please come to meet and talk with the artists on Friday March 16 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm or on Friday April 20 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm at The Bagel Mill, 145 Grove Street Extension, Peterborough, NH. Liz will share her colored pencil techniques and Harriet will discuss her work in oils. In addition to the exhibition at The Bagel Mill, Liz Winchester-Larson is currently showing a group of her still-life artworks done in colored pencil through March 20 in the front window at The Apothecary, 35 Main Street, Keene, NH.

Call for Artists: All Around Monadnock Art Exhibition
Historical Society of Cheshire County, Keene, NH
|
June 1-September 7, 2018
The Monadnock Region means many things to many people. It is recognized for its natural beauty. It is known as the "Currier & Ives Corner" of New Hampshire because of its remarkably intact early New England historical record and built environment. It is known for its quintessential New England festivals and cultural events. And it is known for its people, from old-time New England characters to those who have come to love the region's heritage, culture and landscape. Our region illustrates the story of New England history, culture and natural environment.
What does the Monadnock Region mean to you? The Historical Society of Cheshire County and the region's artists are collaborating on an exhibit that will allow the artists to answer this question. The people, places, heritage, and culture of the Monadnock area will be recognized and celebrated in this collaborative exhibit. Artists are encouraged to create works that illustrate what the region means to them and how it impacts their own lives. The 40 towns of the Monadnock Region are recognized for their natural beauty and cultural heritage. This exhibit is paying homage to those characteristics of "our" region.
