March Newsletter

Greetings,
Happy almost spring! We have created a college scholarship program called the Open Mind Scholarship for high school seniors. The Open Mind Scholarship honors the diversity of thought, feelings, information and perspectives found in books, as well as the power of books to change people's lives. The awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 and deadline is March 31; click link above for more information. Please encourage people to apply.

Last week a fantastic book was published. This is truly one of the most interesting and amazing books I have read in many a year. It is called, Educated by Tara Westover. I read it last fall and it still sticks with me - and I have a terrible memory. It is the true story of growing up and escaping a complicated and dysfunctional family in rural Idaho. Her parents are survivalists and extreme Mormons who choose not to send Tara to school or take their kids to the doctor, even when terrible accidents happen to them. There are many dynamics and unbelievable events in this book, but what really stands out for me is the way she is able to reveal the steady, although erratic, opening of her mind to the larger world. Her perspective of what is normal and right changes as she is exposed to more people and gets an education. Educated is everything a book should be - gut wrenching, fascinating, moving and forceful enough to make you take a fresh look at your own life. I highly recommend it!

Be well,
Chris

FEATURED REVIEW

Tangerine
is a superbly written journey of the relationship between two young women and the power of love and loss. The book goes in directions unexpected and satisfying while engaging the reader by presenting mesmerizing psychological watercolors of deep subtlety. I got lost in this book.

NEW RELEASES

Inspiring, personal, and often spiritual reflections on how women can find peace, make wise choices, practice everyday joy, and step into their power from Geneen Roth--author of the #1
New York Times
 bestselling
Women Food and God.

Chicago
by David Mamet

From his perch at the
Chicago Tribune
, Mike Hodge--scarred veteran of the Great War--had gotten to know the underbelly of the metropolis like few others. Politicians, gangsters, prostitutes, bootleggers, opium addicts, jazz musicians and con artists-- he'd observed them all. So perhaps
he should have known better when he fell for Annie Walsh, whose family was deeply involved with the mob.

by Brian Castner

In 1789, Alexander Mackenzie traveled 1200 miles on the immense river in Canada that now bears his name, in search of the fabled Northwest Passage that had eluded mariners for hundreds of years. In 2016, the acclaimed memoirist Brian Castner retraced Mackenzie's route by canoe in a grueling journey -- and discovered the Passage he could not find.

"Asymmetry is extraordinary. . . Halliday has written, somehow all at once, a transgressive roman a clef, a novel of ideas and a politically engaged work of metafiction." --Alice Gregory,
The New York Times Book Review

"A brilliant and complex examination of power dynamics in love and war."
--Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

"A scorchingly intelligent first novel. . . Asymmetry will make you a better reader, a more active noticer. It hones your senses." --Parul Seghal, The New York Times

A n astonishing account of one woman's isolated childhood and youth among her Mormon family in rural Idaho. Never having been vaccinated, never having attended public school, spending her years stocking away canned peaches for Y2K and scrapping metal in her anti-government father's junk yard, she remains ignorant of all the things people today assume are common knowledge: the Holocaust, the World Trade Center, etc. Despite her abusive older brother's gaslighting, her father's desire to keep the family off the grid, and her mother's inclination to treat all the family's wounds-regardless of severity-with homeopathic remedies,Tara studies trigonometry, takes the SATs, and with the encouragement of professors, ends up studying at Cambridge and Harvard. A story of the strength it takes to leave home to become more than what you are, and of the strength it takes to return home when home no longer wants you.
- Hanna Yost

This twisty psychological thriller blew my mind. Amber is in a coma, besieged by shards of memory, fighting her way to consciousness, while her would-be killer is in the room. You will not be able to drag your eyes away from this profoundly disturbing read. - Amy Palmer
