A Note from the Principal

The winter weather has played havoc with our daily school schedule. Thank you for your flexibility during these unpredictable weather times. We are trying to communicate in multiple ways to make sure you get the information in a timely and accurate manner. Make sure you sign-up for voice and text messaging for school closings and delays. It is also a good time to log into your parent portal to monitor your child's grades, attendance and class assignments. A reminder that Thursday, January,
25th is Parent / Teacher Conference Day from 3:00-6:45pm. Just call the front office at 740 833 1010 to sign-up for a conference.

Another way to connect to the high school is to join me for our bi-monthly "Coffee and Conversation" at Hayes. It is a great time to sit down with the principal, enjoy a cup of coffee and hear the latest in new class offerings, initiatives, and more. You do not have to sign-up, simply stop by Friday January 19 th from 9:00-10:00am in the front
office. I hope you can join us.

It must be the 21st Century! I have started communicating to you through my new Twitter account. I will keep you informed of the latest happenings at Hayes. There are so many exciting things occurring everyday! My list of followers is growing by the day (300+ new ones this week). If I can do it, so can you! Be sue to follow all of the action at @DrRStranges

Clinic Updates

Hello everyone!  Hayes has a wonderful program coming to you in the next few weeks.  It's called the Mobile Dentist and it's an opportunity for students to receive dental attention who may not ordinarily receive it on a consistent basis.  Please click on the link below for additional information.

Fighting off Winter Illnesses

The winter cold and flu season is upon us.  The flu season has definitely been picking up.  Influenza is now considered widespread in Ohio.  To keep your student and the other students in our community healthy and ready to learn, the district nurses would like to share some general illness guideliness as we continue through cold and flu season.  Here is how you can help prevent the spread of germs.

Fever?     A fever of 100 degrees or more requires the student to remain home until there is no fever without the use of fever reducing medication.
If your child develops a fever of 100 or greater at school, they will be sent home from the office.

Vomiting and Diarrhea (watery stools)?
Students need to remain home for 24 hours if they have been vomiting or have diarrhea.
Coughing That Won't Stop?
A cough that lasts for more than 3 days could be a symptom of a more serious illness and requires your student to be seen by a physician.

Red, Swollen, Crusty, Painful Eyes?
If your child has all three of these they could have bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye). Students with the above eye symptoms may not come to school until receiving 24 hours of antibiotic care and a note from the doctor.

Lice
Anyone can get head lice. Head lice are a common condition in school-age children and are easily transferred from person to person. Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the human scalp. They feed only on human blood. Head lice cannot jump or fly, and they do not spread disease. Be sure to check your child's head often, and if you suspect they have lice contact your school nurse or your family doctor for treatment recommendations.

How else can you help?
The greatest way to prevent the spread of germs is proper handwashing.  Please stress with your student the importance of good hand washing and covering their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

How can we help?
The Delaware City Schools custodial staff continue to create healthy schools by providing  a safe, clean environment for your child to learn!  Students have access to sinks in the classrooms and hand soap dispensers throughout the building. Finally, DCS works closely with the Delaware Health District to monitor illnesses and communicate any changes appropriately.

Please call your student's building nurse if you have any questions.

Counseling News

Scheduling 2018-19  Beginning on Tuesday January 16th, the School Counselors will be presenting 2018-2019 scheduling information to each class during House.  The entire presentation will be available online at the school website under the Counseling Department  -> Scheduling Information.  All scheduling resources will be provided on the website as well as on Canvas for students.  Beginning February 5th, Counselors will begin meeting with students in their English class to schedule.  This is a very structured scheduling process and student preparedness is necessary.  All course requests must be entered into Powerschool and their course selection sheets completed by their scheduling day.

Parent Invitation:  Due to the volume of students, a special evening presentation is scheduled for parents.  On January 25, 2018 @ 6:15 PM, parents are invited and encouraged to come see the same presentation given to their children with their student's counselor.  Each counselor will have a presentation for their specific alphabetic groups and can field many of the individual questions that may arise.  When you enter the school through the student parking lot, there will be signage for the specific counselor locations.

Freshmen Update:
Is your 9th grade student interested in a career in Engineering?  If so, they should take advantage of an opportunity to visit the Delaware Area Career Center's Engineering program!  DACC will be hosting interested students on January 24th.  Students can get a permission form from the Counseling Office.  Please see this link for more information about the Engineering program!

The State of Ohio is now providing the opportunity for all 11th grade students to take the ACT free of charge at their high school.  Hayes High School will be providing this opportunity on Tuesday, February 27th.  This is the official assigned date by the Ohio Dept. of Education and ACT.  Because of test security, planning and logistics, the test date is not optional.  There will be a single make-up date on March 20th for medically excused absences.  All 11th grade students are required to participate in this exam, unless exempted for special education.  Please stay tuned for details regarding the special school day schedule, testing procedures and locations.  Students will be registered for this ACT administration during class time, so there is no need for students to register themselves on the ACT website for this test date.

The next Dan Morrison ACT Prep Workshop will be held on Thursday, February 8th from 9:30 - 11:30 AM at Hayes HS.  This is a two-hour delay start Professional Development Day, so students will miss shortened class periods.  Their absence from class will be a school approved absence.  Students will be responsible for making up any missed school work.  This is a great opportunity for Juniors who are prepping for the free ACT given at Hayes on February 27th to gain strategies for taking the test.  Seniors who plan to take the National ACT on February 10th may also attend as well as any Sophomores who may be planning to that the ACT later this school year.  Mr. Morrison is offering this workshop for the discounted price of $20!  More details can be found HERE and registration materials can be found HERE.

Seniors only!
Local Scholarships are being posted on a weekly basis on the College and Career website.  Many applications are due in March.  Check the website for requirements and deadlines.

Seniors were emailed a diploma survey to indicate how they would like to appear on their diploma.  The survey is due January 26th.  The survey can be accessed here

Seniors are required to have 21 hours of community service hours prior to graduation.  The hours can be accumulated over the course of their high school career.  These hours can be ANY service to our community as long as it is outside of school hours and are unpaid.  Document hours on the form here!  Forms should be returned to the Main Office.

Seniors who have requested mid-year college reports will have those reports sent to colleges over the next several weeks.  Please be patient as Mrs. Pollard works on sending these out.

Seniors who plan to enter the workforce after high school should reach out to Mrs. Pollard.  Mrs. Pollard is working with the Chamber of Commerce to gain employment for these Seniors with local businesses who will be providing competitive wages and benefits.
